RU stumbles in first day of doubleheader

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Regis University softball team hit a rough patch in the first day of doubleheader action against the Colorado Christian Cougars (23-15, 13-9 RMAC). The Rangers could not convert on the offensive side of the ball falling 1-0 in extra innings in the first game and 5-1 in the second game.

However, today was a special day for the Rangers as they partook in a nationwide Breast Cancer Awareness event. The event is in support of Missy Frost, head softball coach at the University of Indianapolis along with one out of every eight women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

A total of 41 teams hailing from 16 states and 14 different athletic conferences wore the honoring slogan Faith.Fight.Frost. Although the results of today's games were not favorable to the Rangers, they wore pink in support of Coach Frost and all those affected by breast cancer.

How It Happened | Game 1: A defensive battle throughout the entirety of the game began at the first pitch. The Rangers struggled to convert runners to runs leaving players on base in all but three innings.

In the top of the fifth, RU had their largest opportunity to go up on the Cougars as Alyssa Finger and Melissa Heronema opened the inning with a pair of singles. On one out, Bradey King advanced runners and beat out the throw to first with a bunt to load the bases. The Rangers could not capitalize on the bases loaded situation as the score remained locked at 0-0.

A huge defensive stop came in the bottom of the sixth for Regis turning a double play to keep CCU scoreless. RU fell out in order in the top of the eighth as the Cougars were able to bring the winning run across the plate on two outs with a single up the middle.

Game Notes: The Rangers left eight runners stranded on base but were slightly outhit 8-6. Finger went 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded a stolen base as did King and Delaney McGinn. King added a 1-for-2 performance while earning two walks. Logan Losh suffered the loss tallying two strikeouts and moving to an overall record of 17-7.

How It Happened | Game 2: The Cougars took an early 3-0 lead in the home half of the second inning. RU notched their first run of the day in the top of the fifth as Heronema scored Finger, who reached on a single.

The Rangers trailed 4-1 as CCU extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the seventh, RU made a last ditch effort to find some offensive rhythm. Carlie Sexton reached on a lead-off error and Finger followed it up with a single but the two were left stranded as Regis was unable to convert.

Game Notes: RU was outhit 7-2 while defensively forcing the Cougars to leave 11 runners on base. Finger went 2-for-3 again with one run to finish the day as the Rangers most consistent offensive bat at 4-for-6. Taylor Armitage suffered the loss as she earned her 18th start this season. Rachel Jones threw in her longest stint on the mound this season allowing just one run in 3.2 innings pitched.

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis and Colorado Christian will wrap up the series Sunday, April 9 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
