DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team took care of business defeating the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls (19-32, 16-22 RMAC) 8-0 and 8-3 in the final two games of the regular season.
Logan Losh recorded her eighth shutout and 23
rd victory of the season as she is now tied for second in single-season wins while leading Regis to the 8-0 lead.
Carlie Sexton and Melissa Heroname led the Rangers offensively. Ca. Sexton went 3-for-6 at the plate while adding four RBIs and three runs on two home runs. Heronema went 4-for-5 with two runs and three stolen bases.
How It Happened | Game 1: Regis opened the game retiring the Cowgirls in order while taking a 3-0 lead after one complete. With the bases loaded,
Lauren Hernandez singled through the left side to go up 1-0.
Emily John turned a heads up play on a wild pitch sliding RU into a 2-0 lead and
Alyssa Finger notched the sacrifice hit to make it 3-0.
Highlands sat with a runner in scoring position on third in the top half of the second but Losh stuck her out swinging to get Regis out of the inning.
Ca. Sexton blasted a lead-off home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the third extending the Ranger lead to 4-0. In the same inning, on one out, Finger recorded a two-RBI home run of her own to center field pushing RU's lead once again, 6-0.
Ca. Sexton tallied her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score John, who tripled to right field the prior at bat.
Laura Scheffel enforced the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth placing a bunt down forcing the Cowgirls to make a play and in that process Finger scored unearned due to reaching on an error.
Game Notes: Ca. Sexton went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of runs and RBIs and John added a 2-for-3 performance with two runs. Finger chipped in with two runs and a game-high three RBIs. The Rangers were extremely efficient scoring eight runs on eight hits while leaving only three runners stranded. Losh struck out five batters as she moves to her fourth-straight game without allowing a run.
How It Happened | Game 2: Almost producing the exact same start as the first game, the Rangers retired Highlands batters in order while moving to a 4-0 lead after one complete. Ca. Sexton hit her second home run of the day on a two-RBI shot to the same spot as the first. A single to left center by
Leah Gordon brought two more across and gave RU a 4-0 lead.
Taylor Armitage held the Cowgirls without a hit through the first two innings. Although, two hits were given up in the top of the third, the Rangers defense kept Highlands scoreless.
NMHU broke their silence for the first time of the day in the top of the fourth scoring three to come within one, 4-3. A King lead-off home run to left center in the bottom of fifth put the Rangers ahead 5-3.
RU would not allow Highlands any more runs as they brought three more across in the bottom of the sixth to seal the sixth-straight win.
Game Notes: Armitage earned the win for Regis moving to an overall record of 7-14.
Rachel Jones and
Cortney Sexton also saw time on the mound as Co. Sexton came in to grab the final two outs of the game. Heronema went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and two stolen bases. Gordon also went a perfect 2-for-2 with a game-high three RBIs. King added a 3-for-4 performance with two runs and two RBIs while just one single shy of completing a cycle with a home run, triple and double.
Up Next For The Rangers: Regis will head to Grand Junction, Colo. to compete in the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed. Tournament play is set to begin Thursday, May 4.
