Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth quarter comeback falls short, CSU-P squeaks by Rangers, 52-51

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis university women's basketball team (10-9, 9-5 RMAC) lost a 52-51 heartbreaker as their fourth quarter comeback came up short against Colorado State University-Pueblo (15-6, 13-2 RMAC), the RMAC's top-seed on Saturday night.

How it Happened: Regis got out to a sluggish start scoring just two points in the first eight minutes of the contest. The Thunderwolves took advantage of the slow start and took a 9-2 lead with 1:28 remaining in the first. The Rangers scored eight points, four of which were free-throws, through the first quarter and allowed CSU-P to take a 14-8 advantage heading into the second quarter.

RU doubled their first quarter total as they outscored the Thunderwolves 16-10 in the second quarter. Regis knocked-down the first four points of the quarter to tie the game at 14 with 6:41 to play until halftime. They took their first lead of the contest on their next possession when sophomore Jaz'Myne Snipes made a layup assisted by freshman Emma Sterkel.

Senior Majestie Robinson sank a shot from three-point range that gave the Rangers a 24-22 lead with 1:11 on the clock but CSU-P was able to get a bucket before the end of the period. The score was knotted at 24 apiece going into the break.

It took two and a half minutes before either team made a basket in the third quarter. The teams traded buckets but it was CSU-P who went on the first run of the half. They outscored RU 21-13 and gave themselves a eight-point cushion, 45-37, going into the fourth.

Regis started the quarter on a 3-0 run and held the Thunderwolves scoreless the first three minutes. After CSU-P scored a layup, the Rangers went on an 8-0 run fueled by six-straight points by freshman Whitney Jacob. Back-to-back free-throws by senior Chante Church gave RU a 48-47 edge with 3:34 to play.

A CSU-P layup with 53 seconds on the clock gave them a 50-48 lead. Regis was forced to foul, sending the Thunderwolves to the charity-stripe with seven seconds remaining. Jacob made a three-point shot as time expired, but it was too little too late. The Rangers were one-point shy, 52-51, of knocking of the RMAC's top seed.

Game Notes: Jacob scored a game-high 18-points and was the only RU player to score double-digits. She shot 50 percent from the field (8-16 FG, 1-2 3-pt) with just 19-minutes of play. Sigler added nine points shooting 3-for-3 from downtown. Robinson had eight points and Snipes added seven.

Sigler also added four assists and two rebounds.

Junior Shelby Espinosa grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds with five coming on each side of the ball. Regis out-rebounded the Thunderwolves 42-33. Snipes and Espinosa each had three steals.

Up Next for the Rangers: The women's basketball team will travel to Golden to square-off with Colorado School of Mines on February 2 at 5:00 p.m.
