DENVER, Colo. – On Saturday night, the Regis University men's basketball team (12-3, 6-3 RMAC) throttled the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (7-8, 3-6 RMAC) 103-82 behind a season-high 35 points from junior
Jarrett Brodbeck.
How It Happened: The game was close and very tightly contested for the first eight minutes of the first half, but after that Regis put together a strong 13-0 run that allowed them to take a 27-16 lead at the 10:28 mark. Brodbeck stretched out the lead on a number of occasions, but with 2:15 to go in the first half, the guard took a step-back three-point jumper that swished through the net giving the Rangers a very comfortable 49-32 lead. Brian Dawson took the inbound pass and pulled-up from midcourt, sinking the shot right as the buzzer sounded. RU held a 56-36 advantage as the teams broke for halftime.
CMU did not give up in the second half, challenging Regis more than they did in the first half. In fact, the Mavericks opened up the second half with a 13-3 run that cut the Rangers' lead to only eight points at 60-52 in the first 5:17 of the second half. RU found their groove again which featured a lot of scoring from Brodbeck and Dawson. The teams traded baskets for a large part of the second half but by the time the clock ticked to less than three minutes and 30 seconds, Regis had another comfortable 12-point lead. The Rangers closed the game out on a 9-0 run that capped off the 103-82, 21-point win over CMU.
Game Notes: Brodbeck (12-20 FG, 7-11 3-pt, 4-6 FT) torched the Mavericks for 35 points on the night, his highest point total of the season and the most since he scored 32 points against Colorado Christian University last season. Sophomore
Christian Little (6-10 FG, 5-6 FT) poured in 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to go along with three assists. Dawson (6-7 FG, 1-2 3-pt, 1-1 FT) scored 14 points, dishing out a career-high four assists as well. Senior
Dexter Sienko (4-7 FG, 2-2 FT) chipped in with 10 points and a season-high 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. Junior
Avonte Nelms tallied a team-high five assists in the effort. RU held the visitors to 47.1 percent shooting while they enjoyed their second best shooting night, by percentage (56.5 percent), of the season. The rebounding margin also tilted in favor of Regis 39-30 for the night. Additionally, the bench outscored the CMU bench 33-7. Overall, it may have been one of the most complete games that the Rangers have played so far this season.
Up Next for the Rangers: The men's basketball team will play one game next weekend as they journey to Salt Lake City, Utah to play the Westminster College Griffins (11-2, 7-2 RMAC) who rank second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings.
