DENVER, Colo. – On Friday night, the Regis University volleyball team (12-7, 8-2 RMAC) swept the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (4-10, 4-6 RMAC) in straight sets to earn their 12
th victory of the season.
How It Happened: Juniors
Izzy Gosar and
Nikki Kennedy shined brightest in the three-set sweep of the Skyhawks as they both totaled 12 kills apiece. In the opening set it was Gosar who exploded for six massive kills, guiding Regis to a dominating 25-11 first-set win. The team hit a match-high .483 in the first set.
The second set was a lot closer as FLC looked to respond. Although they held the lead for a majority of the second set, the Skyhawks could not hold on. The Rangers fought back into the set after trailing 18-15 in the latter part of the set. A timeout by head coach
Joel List prompted three points in a row for the home side, knotting the game at 18. Trailing by one point, 22-23, Kennedy popped off for three-straight kills to bring it to set point for RU. An attack error from the visitors gave Regis a two-set lead heading into the third.
Looking for their sixth sweep of the season, the Rangers came out hot with two quick points. FLC responded with two points of their own, but that is when Gosar and RU took over. After a kill by sophomore
Caitlyn Burroway, Gosar erupted for four consecutive service aces. One of the aces came as the Skyhawks were out of rotation, but the other three were rockets that the opponents just could not handle. Regis continued to pour it on as they took the set in commanding fashion, 25-13.
Game Notes: With 12 kills apiece, Gosar (.400 attack percentage) and Kennedy (.588 attack percentage) stole the show offensively for the Rangers. Freshman
Kate Kleinschmidt followed with nine kills, with Burroway and junior
Kelsey Green totaling six kills each. Kennedy, the nation's leading blocker, had another solid game defensively as she posted six total blocks in only three sets of work. Junior setter
Silvia Basso had three blocks and three service aces on the night as she also tallied 40 assists for a 13.67 assists per set average. Senior libero
Kristina Schell had 13 digs in the match to lead all RU players. The team combined for a .318 attack percentage, stopping nine shots at the net and collecting seven service aces, led by Gosar who had four aces.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University volleyball team will return to the Regis Fieldhouse tomorrow night to go head-to-head with the Adams State University Grizzlies (3-6, 6-11 RMAC) at 5 p.m.
