LAKEWOOD, Colo. - In their final regular season match, the Regis University volleyball team (19-9, 14-4 RMAC) clawed their way to a five-set win over the Colorado Christian University Cougars (13-14, 11-7 RMAC) on Friday night.
How it Happened: The opening set went to CCU who came out looking to spoil the weekend for Regis. The Cougars won 25-19 in the opening set as they held the potent Rangers' offense to a .146 attack percentage. Each team recorded one block in the set, but three service errors for RU did not help their cause.
Regis rebounded with wins in sets two and three, pushing their attack percentage to .279 in the second, finding a way to earn a 25-21 win in set three despite hitting .098 in that set. The Rangers had three blocks in set three while the home team did not record a single block.
The fourth set saw both teams put together a lot of good rallies, and each side swung better than .215. However, a late six-point lead for CCU proved too much for the visitors as the Cougars won 25-21 to even the match at two sets apiece.
With the match on the line in set five, RU finally came alive. With an early lead, senior
Kristina Schell went on a tear at the service line, recording four-straight service aces to take an 8-3 lead in the final set of the night. Regis extended their lead to 12-5 before finally closing out the match with a 15-7 win as sophomore
Caitlyn Burroway hammered home the match winner.
Game Notes: Burroway led all Rangers with 16 kills on the night, with four others recording double-digit kills in the match. Junior
Nikki Kennedy had 14, with juniors
Izzy Gosar and
Kelsey Green each posting 11 apiece. Freshman
Kate Kleinschmidt had eight kills and led the team with a whopping .444 attack percentage with zero errors on the night. Junior setter
Silvia Basso had 48 assists, Schell posted a team-high 18 digs with Burroway following with 17 for her 14
thdouble-double this season. Gosar had a team-high four blocks in the match as RU stopped a total of eight shots at the net.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis volleyball team has secured the No. 5 spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament that is scheduled to begin next Tuesday, November 6. The Rangers will take on cross-town rivals and No. 4 seeded Metropolitan State University of Denver on Tuesday in the first-round.
