DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (6-5, 3-2 RMAC) ended the 2018 schedule with a 78-73 nonconference loss to the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds (5-4, 2-0 LSC) on Wednesday night.
How It Happened: Sophomore
Brian Dawson made the first basket of the game to give the Rangers what would be their largest lead of the game, 2-0. The Hounds went on a 6-0 run with four free-throws and a layup but RU managed to stick around and tie the game at 8 apiece.
ENMU took control of the half, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and holding Regis to just 33.3 percent. Senior
Jarrett Brodbeck and Dawson did most of the first half scoring with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Just two other Ranger players contributed points in the first half.
RU watched their deficit increase to as many as 11, 42-31, with 57 seconds left in the opening half. Regis went into the locker room trailing 46-36 after making just four of their last 11 shots.
Junior
Christian Little scored the first four points for the Rangers in the second half before Brodbeck sank a three-pointer to cut the ENMU lead to just five, 48-43. The Hounds, however, stretched their lead back to 11 with 13 minutes left in the contest.
Brodbeck sank a three, on his way to a game-high 22 points, to spark a 10-0 RU run that ended with a trey from sophomore
Tomas Auruskevicius. Regis then took their first lead of the game since the opening bucket, 63-62, with two made free-throws by Little with 8:25 remaining. Little score 12 of the Rangers last 14 points.
The last eight minutes was tight with five ties three lead changes. Senior
Ryan Beisty made both of his free-throw attempts to give RU a 71-69 edge with just under three minutes to play.
The game was knotted at 73, but it was the Greyhounds that used a dunk to create momentum, helping them score the last five points to claim a 78-73 victory.
Game Notes: As a team, Regis shot 39.7 percent from the field, 31.0 percent from three-point range and 72.0 percent from the line. The Rangers were led by Brodbeck (7-19 FG, 6-16 3PT) and Little (8-13 FG, 0-1 3PT) with 22 and 21 points respectively.
Beisty secured 10 of 37 RU rebounds while ENMU had 38. Regis had just eight points off turnovers compared to the Greyhounds 11.
