Rocak scores career-high, Rangers rout Eagles 81-68

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (6-2, 3-0 RMAC) handed Chadron State College (4-5, 2-1 RMAC) their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) loss of the season, 81-68, inside Regis Fieldhouse on Saturday night. The Rangers shot a staggering 52.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point distance.

How It Happened: RU played the first five minutes from behind as Chadron jumped out to a 10-7 lead behind 4-of-6 shooting. In a game that featured 84 combined free-throw attempts, 49 from Regis and 35 from Chadron, the Rangers scored six-straight points from the charity stripe to take a 13-10 lead.

Freshman Toni Rocak slammed home a fast-break dunk, on his way to a career-high scoring performance, that sent energy throughout the Fieldhouse and sparked an 8-0 RU run. Rocak scored the first six points of the run while junior Christian Little made the last bucket to put Regis ahead 21-12 with 9:21 on the first half clock.

Three straight free-throws by junior Roberto Vercelino and Little stretched the Rangers advantage to 13, 27-14. Rocak and Little split the final eight points of the half to go into the locker room with a commanding 38-22 edge.

The Eagles were able to capitalize on RU miscues to score the first seven points of the second half to bring themselves within striking distance. Regis began the second half with six turnovers and 0-of-3 shooting. The Rangers finally stopped the Eagles' run with two made free-throws, but then gave up another 7-0 run bringing the score to 40-36 in the favor of RU.

Sophomore Tomas Auruskevicius sank the first second-half Regis bucket after six and a half minutes without one. Sophomore Brian Dawson hit a three-pointer to stretch the Rangers lead to 16, 66-50. RU scored 10 points, all from the foul-line, in the final six minutes of the contest to maintain their lead and put the game away 81-68.

Game Notes: Regis shot 77.6 percent from the charity stripe, takings 49 attempts and making 38. The 38 made free-throws are the third most in a single game in program history. The team also made 19-of-36 (52.8 percent) from the field and 5-of-10 (50 percent) from long-range.

Little (5-7 FG, 1-3 3-PT, 9-11 FT) led the team with 20 points while Rocak (6-7 FG, 7-10 FT) added a career-high 19 points. Sic other Rangers tallied points on the night.

Dawson and senior Avonte Nelms dished out three assists apiece, pacing RU to 11 total compared to 10 for the Eagles.

Regis also held the advantage in the rebounding column, grabbing 35 total and holding Chadron to just 24. Senior Ryan Beisty snagged seven boards, three offensive, to lead the Rangers. Vercellino followed with six, all of the defensive end of the court.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's basketball team will head to Colorado Springs, Colo. to face UCCS (2-5, 0-2 RMAC) on Friday, December 15 at 5 p.m.
