DENVER, Colo. – After a less than stellar first half, the Regis University men's basketball team (18-5, 12-5 RMAC) used a late second half rally to earn a 93-88 victory over the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (11-13, 8-10 RMAC) on Friday night.
How It Happened: Regis found themselves down by 10 points early in the first half, but junior
Jarrett Brodbeck poured in 18 points in 16 minutes of the first half, helping the Rangers close the gap to 43-42 at halftime.
Much like it was in the first 20 minutes of the game, UCCS came out firing in the second half which led to the visitors exploding out to another double-digit lead at 65-55. That is when RU really started to flex their muscles on both ends of the court. Defensive stops led to big offensive plays on the other end, with each series creating more and more momentum for the Blue and Gold.
Brodbeck, who was fouled on a three-point attempt at the 4:16 mark, nailed all three shots from the charity stripe to put Regis in front 85-84. They never looked back. Senior
Dexter Sienko came up huge on the defensive end, creating a steal and following up massive block with only 25 seconds on the clock. It was a very impressive win by the Rangers who picked up their sixth-straight with the 93-88 come from behind win over the Mountain Lions.
Game Notes: Brodbeck scored 25 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the field, including 4-of-10 from long range. Sienko had another huge game defensively, collecting four blocked shots, nine rebounds and three steals to go along with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Junior
Avonte Nelms (6-9 FG, 2-5 3-pt, 7 REB, 2 AST, 2 STL) scored a season-high 16 points as senior
Ty McGee (12 PTS, 5-9 FG, 2-3 3-pt) and sophomore
Christian Little (10 PTS, 3-6 FG, 2 AST) were the two other RU players in double-figures. Regis finished the night 36-69 from the floor, and 9-23 from three-point land. They were outrebounded 38-32 but they forced 16 turnovers that led to 16 points on the offensive end.
Up Next for the Rangers: The men's basketball team returns to the Regis Fieldhouse tomorrow night as they battle the cross-town rival Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners at 7 p.m.
