COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University softball team (7-7, 2-0 RMAC) earned their fifth and sixth-straight win in a row, outscoring the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (5-9, 0-2 RMAC) 33-1on Sunday afternoon. They won game one 18-0 and followed up with a 15-1 win in game two.
How It Happened- Game One: Regis exploded for 18 runs, the fourth-most runs in single game school history, and they only needed five innings to do it. The Rangers got half of their run production in the top of the first inning. Senior
Emily John (1-4, HR, 3 RBI) smashed a three-run homer over the left center field fence during the run.
RU would go on to score two runs in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth to take a commanding 18-0 lead into the fifth inning. Freshman
Tori Brown crushed a three-run shot to right-center for her first collegiate homerun in the top half of the third inning.
On the mound, senior
Logan Losh (W, 4-3) was dominant, taming the Mountain Lions offense while her teammates put on a show. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, Losh got three quick outs and the game came to an end after five complete innings.
Game Notes: Brown went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate to lead all players, collecting a career-high three RBI's on a homerun, a double and two singles. The reigning RMAC Player of the Week, senior
Melissa Heronema (2-2, 2B, BB, HBP, 6 RBI), went berserk as she recorded a career-high six RBI's in the game. Losh pitched all five innings, allowing four hits and four walks, but she did not allow a single run and had seven strikeouts.
How It Happened- Game Two: The offensive onslaught continued in the second game as the visitors piled on another 15 runs in six innings of work, beating the home squad by 14 runs.
It was a 2-0 game in favor of Regis all the way until the top of the fifth inning. That is when the Rangers opened up for six runs. With two runners in scoring position, Brown doubled to left center, scoring both runners on the play. Senior
Delaney McGinn followed with a double of her own that scored Brown. After a pitching change, senior
Lauren Hernandez smacked a double down the right field line to score McGinn, which put RU ahead 8-0.
UCCS got one run in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game alive, however, Regis responded with a seven-run top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Brown added two more RBI's in the inning and McGinn crushed a two-run homer to left-center for her first dinger of the season. At the end of the sixth, the Rangers had a 15-1 lead and that is how the game would end.
Game Notes: After setting a career-high in game one, Brown (3-4, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R) set another career-high with four RBI's in the second game. McGinn (3-4, 1B, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) finished the game a triple shy from hitting for the cycle. Hernandez (3-4, 2 2B, RBI) added three hits and Johnson (2-5, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) recorded a homerun and a double at the plate.
Sophomore
Taylor Armitage (W, 3-4) was nearly unhittable in her time on the mound, allowing only three hits in six innings of work. She allowed only one earned run, and struck out two batters.
