Game Recap: Softball |

Rangers split in day two of West Texas A&M Tournament

CANYON, Texas – The Regis University softball team (1-3) won one and lost one against the Augustana University Vikings (2-4) on day two of the West Texas A&M Tournament.

How It Happened | Game One: Regis opened the game with a two-run top of the first. Senior Bre Pearsall singled to third base to leadoff the game, then she advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Senior Melissa Heronema got on board with a single that advanced Pearsall to third. She stole second on next pitch, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs.

Sophomore Analece Apodaca grounded out to the shortstop but Pearsall came in to score and Heronema advanced to third on the play. Senior Lauren Hernandez followed with a single through the left side, plating Heronema for a 2-0 Rangers lead.

Augustana finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, tying the game at two runs apiece. Neither team scored for the rest of regulation, and the game moved into extra innings after senior Logan Losh struck out the final batter in the bottom of the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, sophomore Laura Scheffel was placed on second base to start the inning. After Pearsall grounded out to shortstop, Heronema stepped up and laced a single to right field, scoring Scheffel from second base. Apodaca followed with a two-run homer to left field to put RU ahead 5-2. The Vikings got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth, but Losh settled in and got the next three batters out to seal the victory.

Game Notes: Heronema (2-4, 2R, RBI, 2 SB) and Apodaca (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) led the way two hits each, with both of them picking up clutch hits in the top half of the eighth inning. Senior Delaney McGinn (1-3, 3B), Hernandez (1-4, RBI) and Pearsall (1-4) were the only other players for RU to collect hits in the game. Losh (W, 1-1) earned her first win of 2018 going all eight innings and allowing only three earned runs. She struck out three batters on the day.

How It Happened | Game Two: Regis gave up a single run to Augustana in the top of the second but answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Senior Delaney McGinn reached first base on a fielder's choice that retired Losh at second base. McGinn advanced into scoring position by stealing second and freshman Tori Brown lifted the very next pitch into left field. Brown's hit resulted in an RBI triple to tie the game at one.

The Rangers saw another Vikings runner cross home plate in the top of the third. RU trailed 2-1 the remainder of the game before Apodaca hit a solo homerun to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and bases loaded, senior Emily John executed a SAC RBI as a pinch hitter to give Regis a 3-2 lead.

The Vikings regained the lead as the Rangers surrendered four hits and two runs in the top of the seventh. RU had a chance in the bottom of the seventh to win the game or send it to extra innings, but they were retired 1-2-3.

Game Notes: Hernandez (2-3, 1R) and Losh (2-3, 2B) were the only Regis players with multiple hits. The Rangers scored three runs on seven hits. Armitage (0-2) pitched the entire game and recorded her second loss of the season. She gave up 13 hits on 84 total pitches and all four runs against her were earned.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU will return to Texas next weekend to play in the St. Mary's Tournament. They will play St. Mary's on February 8 at 4 p.m.
