No. 24 Regis loses a heartbreaker to No. 4 UNK in five sets

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 24 ranked Regis University volleyball team (10-6) stumbles in the fourth and fifth set, dropping to No. 4 University of Nebraska – Kearney 3-2 in a back-and-forth affair Tuesday night.

How it Happened: The first set was a perfect example of what Regis is capable of when they are firing on all cylinders. The Rangers came out and took it to the Lopers, leading to a 25-13 opening set victory. Sophomore Caitlyn Burroway recorded five kills and junior Kelsey Green had three, coupled with blocks from juniors Izzy Gosar (2) and Nikki Kennedy (2), fueling the home squad to a 1-0 lead early.

The second set was vastly different for Regis. After hitting .344 in the first set, the Rangers dropped to .128 in the second which lead to a 25-19 set two win for UNK.

In the third set, RU bounced back as Burroway (5), Kennedy (4) and Gosar (4) all lit it up with kills offensively. The trio paced Regis to a massive 25-21 win in the second set, setting up a chance to win the match in set four.

Set four started with three-straight points for the Lopers, but the Rangers' resilience saw them convert five-straight points to take a 5-3 lead in the early going. With a 17-14 lead, UNK scored on back-to-back plays to cut the lead to one. RU called a quick timeout, but the Lopers scored two more points to take an 18-17 lead. Finally with the score knotted at 24 points apiece, a kill from UNK followed by a service ace allowed the visitors to tie the match at two sets apiece.

The fifth and final set is something Regis wishes they could have back. The Lopers scored the first four points of the set and before anyone knew it the score was 10-5 and the teams switched sides. The Rangers were never able to climb back into the set, falling 15-8 in the final set. It felt like UNK snuck away with the five-set win after RU secured all of the momentum after the fourth set.

Game Notes: In total, Kennedy totaled 18 kills, eight blocks, hitting at a .306 clip in the match. Burroway tallied 16 kills and 13 digs for her ninth double-double this season. Gosar had a solid night with 14 kills, four blocks and five digs. The team recorded a .207 attack percentage on the night, 12 blocks and six aces. Senior Kristina Schell had a ridiculous night defensively, registering a season-high 29 digs and matching a career-high five service aces. Junior setter Silvia Basso had 54 assists and three blocks in the match. Freshman Kate Kleinschmidt recorded a season-high seven kills and four blocks as she stepped in for an injured player.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 24 ranked volleyball team will travel to Colorado Mesa University and Western State Colorado University this weekend for two conference matchups. Regis will play CMU on Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. battle with the Mountaineers on Saturday.
