DENVER, Colo. – Head coach
J.B. Belzer recorded his 300th career win on Friday afternoon as the Regis University women's soccer team (1-1-1) defeated Angelo State University (1-2) 2-0 in their home-opener.
How It Happened: Set pieces proved to be the difference in the 2-0 shutout win for Regis. Junior
Emily Ramos served two corner kicks into the box that resulted in goals for sophomore
Keegan Storlie and senior
Cat Devitt, respectively. Storlie netted the game-winning goal in the 51st minute of play and Devitt put the game to rest just 12 minutes later.
Senior
Bethany Hohnstein recorded the first two shots of the contest. Her first attempt missed wide right, but her second opportunity tested the Belles goalkeeper, forcing her to parry the long-distance strike over the crossbar.
The Rangers played solid defense, allowing just one shot on target in the first 45 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper
Julia Coombs answered when she was called upon in the 22nd minute of play, recording her lone save of the half.
The last scoring opportunity of the first half for RU came off the foot of freshman
Gia Lemley with five minutes left to play in the half.
The Belles managed three more looks at goal before the half ended, but none of them landed on frame.
Each team recorded four shots in the first 45 minutes, but it was RU that held a 3-1 shot on goal advantage.
Regis struck first with a goal in the first five minutes of the second half. Ramos played a corner kick into the mixer that found its way to Storlie who tapped the ball past the keeper and across the goal line.
On the Rangers very next corner kick opportunity, Devitt hustled to get on the end of a driven ball played to the near-post by Ramos. Devitt's touch found its way into the back of the net, securing the victory.
RU threatened a third goal as they doubled the Belles shot attempts in the second half, 6-3.
Game Notes: Devitt scored her first goal of the season and led Regis with three total shots, placing two on-goal. Storlie scored her first goal as well as the Rangers' first goal of the season. Both of her shot-attempts were on target.
Hohnstein was the only other RU player to record multiple shots as she accounted for two shots and one on target. Freshman
Natasha Wehner,
Alyssa Barela, and Lemley all added one shot.
As a team, Regis placed 80 percent of their shot-attempts on goal (8-of-10)
Ramos had a career-high two assist.
The Rangers allowed seven total shots while limiting the Belles to just two shots on goal. Coombs saved both shots, recording her first shut-out win of the season.
