Regis Snaps Skid With 66-56 Win Over UC-Colorado Springs

Snipes and Jacob nab double-doubles in Rangers’ 2019-20 home conference opener

DENVER – The Regis University women's basketball team returned to the win column after a three-game losing streak with a commanding 66-56 victory over UC-Colorado Springs at Regis Field House on Friday that was anchored by double-double performances from senior forward Jaz'Myne Snipes and junior forward Whitney Jacob.

How It Happened: The Rangers held a 56-49 lead with 4:12 to go in the game when Snipes hit a layup in the paint to give Regis a 58-49 advantage, which proved to be enough of a cushion to secure RU the victory.

Three free throws within the final 20 seconds from junior guard Tashika Burrell increased the lead to 10. Burrell sank the last of her charity-stripe attempts with only 7 seconds left in the game and moved the contest to its final score.

The Rangers experienced an early deficit for the majority of the first quarter. However, a jumper by freshman forward Sydney Speights from the paint at the 3:31 mark of the opening quarter gave Regis a 9-8 lead. From this point forward, RU grew the lead and maintained it.

Speights' score was part of a 9-0 run that kicked off when Jacob converted the first of two free throws with the Rangers down, 8-6, with 5:29 to go in the first. The run concluded on freshman guard Morgan R. Smith's jumper at the 2:10 mark of the first, bringing Regis to a lead of 14-8.

The lead for RU was as many as 18 on three occasions. The first one capped off a 7-0 run when Snipes made a layup in the paint, 35-17, with 21 seconds remaining before the halftime buzzer.

A free throw from Mountain Lions junior guard Abby Feickert cut the UCCS deficit down to 17 and made the score, 35-18, with 2 seconds left prior to the intermission.

During the third quarter, the Rangers maintained a lead in the teens. This advantage went to as high as 18 again after Snipes made a layup while fouled and hit the free throw that followed to move the Regis lead to 48-30 with 1:42 left in the third.

The last 18-point lead occurred with the first shot of the fourth when Smith drilled a trey just 11 seconds into the final 10 minutes, giving RU a 51-33 lead.

Game Notes: Snipes led all scorers with a game-high 20 points to go along with 15 rebounds (10 defensive), one assist, and a share of the game-high three steals. Jacob contributed 13 points while also nabbing a career-high and game-high 19 rebounds (18 defensive), one assist, a share of the game-highs of one block and three steals. Burrell had 15 points and also matched Jacob, junior guard Emma Sterkel and freshman guard Kali Murrell for the game-high one block among RU players.

The Rangers outshot UC-Colorado Springs in all three categories. Regis made 23 of 62 (37.1 percent) from the paint, had a 5-for-21 (23.8 percent) performance from 3-point range, and hit 15 of 23 (65.2 percent) from the free-throw line. In contrast, the Mountain Lions converted 23 of 72 (31.9 percent) in the paint, managed a 4-for-17 (23.5 percent) showing from the arc, and finished with a 6-for-12 (50.0 percent) night at the charity stripe.
