Tomas Auruskevicius each tallied a season-high 17-points to lift the Regis University men's basketball team (14-6, 11-3 RMAC) over Colorado Mesa University (8-7, 13-8 RMAC), 78-75, in a game that Senior
Jarrett Brodbeck scored the game-winning three-pointer and became the conferences three-point record holder.
How It Happened: The Rangers began the game shooting six-for-six from the field to take a 14-11 lead in the early goings. The sixth made bucket was Brodbeck's 345
thcareer three-pointer, the most career three-pointers of any player in RMAC history. The record-breaker came on Brodbeck's first shot of the game.
RU led by as many as three, 18-15, when junior Christian little connected a layup off the window with 12:47 remaining in the first. The Mavericks, however, were able to keep the score close, making their first four-of-five shots from the field. CMU then went on a 4-0 run, taking their first lead of the game, 18-19.
Auruskevisius was the first player to double-digits as he made six-straight Regis points, giving them a 24-19 advantage. The Rangers offense then began to sputter as the Mavericks held them scoreless in the next 4:40 of play. During that time span, RU scored zero points on seven-straight attempts from the field.
Brodbeck halted the scoring drought, knocking down an unassisted three-pointer with 3:58 left in the first half. Junior Chrisitan Little scored the last four points for Regis as the Rangers converted on just two of their final seven shots, sending them into halftime with a 31-40 deficit.
Coming out of the break, junior
Roberto Vercellino turned an offensive rebound into an RU layup before Auruskevicius made a shot from beyond the arc to cut the shortage to 36-40. After a Maverick layup, Little accounted for a three-point play, getting fouled on his way to a made kayup.
Regis committed one turnover and went 0-for-4 from the field as CMU went on a 9-0 scoring outing to stretch their lead to 43-53. The Mavericks, coming out of a media timeout, took their largest lead of the game, 63-50, with 9:53 left in the game.
Beisty scored five-straight points, including a three-pointer assisted by Auruskevicius, before head coach
Brady Bergeson called a 30 second timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Auruskevicius hit his third three-pointer of the game to cut the Rangers hole to 63-58.
Beisty scored five-straight points for the second time to pull RU within four, 69-65, with 4:48 to play in the game. Regis scored on their next two offensive possessions to bring the score within two, 71-69.
CMU scored the next four points, but the Rangers were able to answer with the final eight points of regulation to secure a 78-75 victory. The game-winning three came from the hands of Brodbeck as time expired.
Game Notes: Beisty and Auruskevicius each scored a season-high 17-points to lift RU to their victory in Grand Junction. Little added 14 and Brodbeck claimed the most three-pointers in RMAC history on his way to 13 points. Vercellino was the only other Regis player in double-digits with 10.
The Rangers led for just 10:40 of the game.
