Rangers Unable to Snap Maverick Winning Streak

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Regis University women's basketball team (10-9, 6-8 RMAC) came into tonight's match-up with Colorado Mesa University (17-1, 14-0 RMAC) ready to serve them their first conference loss of the season but would come up short, falling 56-47 in Grand Junction, Colorado.

How it Happened: With minimal scoring in the first quarter, Regis trailed just 8-6 heading into the second period. The Rangers' first buckets came six and a half minutes into the contest on a pair of Majestie Robinson free throws before Whitney Jacob and Morgan Ducklow kissed baskets off the window to keep RU within range.

Regis took a one-point advantage following a Maddie Hill 3-pointer to start the second quarter. Moments later, Robinson knocked down a triple of her own to put the Rangers up 14-10. Robinson and Jacob combined for 11 points in the remainder of the period but the Maverick's resilience would not cease, allowing the host to stalk Regis 25-23 going into the half.

After being down by only two points at the half, CMU went on a 21-6 run in the third, claiming a 44-31 lead at the end of the quarter. Emma Sterkel cashed in her first three of the game with 6:31 on the clock but it would give way to 14 unanswered points and a 13-point deficit for RU.

Regis managed to lasso the disadvantage back down to 10-points following a Robinson three with 4:23 to play. Jacob found the bottom of the net with a triple as 40 seconds remained on the clock but the home team proved to be determined and took home a 56-46 victory.

Game Notes: Jacob lead the team with 15 points after going 6-for-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from behind the arc. She also added eight rebounds. Robinson finished with 12 points, a team-best five assists and two rebounds. Espinosa brought down a game-high 14 rebounds to compliment her five points, one assist and one steal.

The Rangers were out-shot 30.6% to 40%, going 15-for-49 percent from the field. Regis won the rebound battle 38-31 but committed seven more turnovers than the Mavericks, allowing seven fast-break points and 14 points of turnovers.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers are back on the court tomorrow evening at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado. Tip-off will commence at 5:00 PM.
