ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (15-7, 12-4 RMAC) fell to Adams State University (8-13, 8-8 RMAC) on Friday night, 78-70, snapping their four-game win streak.
How it Happened: Junior Christian little got the Regis scoring started with a three-pointer in the second minute, pulling the Rangers within one, 4-3. Another long-distance shot by senior
Jarrett Brodbeck gave RU their first lead of the game, 8-6, with 15:31 left to play in the first half.
The teams traded buckets throughout the first half, ultimately accounting for seven lead changes and five ties. Brodbeck, on his way to a game-high 32-points, sank five straight free-throws to give Regis their largest lead of the half, 34-27, with 4:30 left in the first.
Adams State sent on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 34, but again, Brodbeck stopped the run with a three-point field goal. The Grizzles scored the last six points of the half to take a 39-40 halftime lead. The Rangers shot just 35.7 percent from the field in the first half while Adams State sank 45.9 percent of their shots.
The second half featured more of the same, back-to-back buckets from each team. Neither team created more than a three-point spread in the second half until the Grizzlies scored seven-straight to take a 65-59 lead with 6:10 left in the game.
Freshman
Toni Rocak made a layup to stop the Grizzlies run and cut the RU deficit to 61-65. Rocak followed his bucket with another layup to bring Regis within two.
After an Adams State three, the Rangers trailed by five when a media timeout was called at the 3:45 mark. The Grizzlies scored five unanswered coming out of the media timeout to take a ten-point lead, 73-63.
RU managed to pull themselves within five, 75-70, with 48 seconds left in the game, but it was too little too late as Adams State secured the upset 78-70.
Game Notes: Regis shot just 33.9 percent from the field compared to the Grizzlies' 44.9 percent. Brodbeck was impressive with 32 points, going 7-for-16 from the field and 6-for-12 from the arc.
The Rangers were out-rebounded 49-38 by Adams State.
