DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (18-9, 15-6 RMAC) honored their four seniors,
Jarrett Brodbeck,
Ryan Beisty,
Avonte Nelms and
DeAndre Johnson, before scoring a season-high 98 points in a 98-63 throttling of Colorado Christian University (6-21, 4-17 RMAC) on Friday night.
How It Happened: Regis never trailed in the game as their defense made it difficult for the Cougars to find the basket in the first half, holding them to 24.1 percent shooting and 19 points. The Rangers help a 10-point advantage, 14-4, with 14:42 left in the first half.
Sophomore
Tomas Auruskevicius made back-to-back free throws to ignite a 9-0 scoring spurt. RU went on another 9-0 run, featuring baskets by four different Regis players, to extend their first half advantage to 36-14. Neither team scored a bucket in the final 3:38 of the half, sending the Rangers into the locker room with a comfortable 40-19 lead.
The second half proved to be similar to the first, with RU outscoring Colorado Christian University 58-44 in the second half. Junior
Christian Little scored the first Regis points of the half from the foul line before Beisty downed his second three-pointer of the game.
Beisty's three-pointer sparked an 8-0 run of his own that ultimately doubled the Cougars score, 50-25, with 18:23 left to play. The Rangers continued their offensive efficiency throughout the next five minutes, stretching their advantage to as many as 33, 66-33.
The scoring then started to come at a slower rate with RU adding 10 points over the next three minutes. Redshirt freshman
Michael Bens knocked down his second three-pointer of the season to give Regis an 87-52 lead with 4:29 on the clock. Just one minute later, Little scored his 17
th point of the game from behind the three-point arc to make it a 92-55 game. The Rangers scored their final six points from the charity stripe to secure a 98-63 win.
Game Notes: RU shot 49.2 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point land. Six Regis players scored in double-digits, including one senior. Little (4-10, 1-3) contributed a game-high 17 points, going 8-for-8 from the foul line.
The Rangers forced 11 turnovers that lead to 10 second chance points.
