Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Rally Comes up Short as Regis Falls to Westminster 67-54

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The sixth seed Regis University women's basketball team (17-12, 12-10 RMAC) left it all on the court this evening but came up short against No. 2 Westminster College (21-7, 17-5 RMAC) in the semifinal round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason tournament, falling 67-54.

How it Happened: The Griffins jumped out to a 5-2 advantage early in the contest but it didn't take long before Regis connected on a pair of shots to knot the score with 6:21 remaining. As the two minute-mark approached, Jaz'Myne Snipes and Majestie Robinson combined for the final five points of the quarter to put the Rangers ahead 12-11.

Regis fell into a slump in the second quarter with Westminster outscoring them 21-13 to take a 32-25 edge heading into halftime. Whitney Jacob and Snipes knocked down a pair of baskets to keep it a one possession game but an 11-4 run from WC in the last three minute set a different tone going into the break.

The Griffins opened the third period with back-to-back triples while RU struggled to click going nearly four minutes before tallying their first points of the quarter off an Emma Sterkel jumper. Despite an 8-2 scoring stretch from Regis, they still trailed by 12 at the end of the third.

Behind Sterkel and Snipes three-pointers, the Rangers managed to bring the deficit down to single digits in the opening minutes of the final period. Another pair of buckets from Sterkel and Snipes pulled Regis within four, but their comeback would be interrupted by a quartet of Westminster layups, extending their lead back up to 12 with 1:40 on the clock. Regis never gave up the fight and continued to battle, but ultimately fell 67-54 to the Griffins.

Game Notes: Robinson and Snipes paved the way for Regis, both recording 11 points. Snipes added four rebounds and two steals. Sterkel was the only other Ranger to finish in double-digits with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting along with three assists. Shelby Espinosa racked up a team-leading 12 rebounds.

From the floor, RU shot 21-for-66 for 31.8% while going 6-of-23 from behind the arc. They were narrowly edged in rebounds, collecting 37 while WC tallied 39.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis completes the 2018-19 campaign with an overall record of 17-12 while going 12-10 inside the RMAC. While their season featured some immense accomplishments, both team an individual, it is more than likely that the loss concludes their season.
