Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Regis University women's soccer team began its weekend on a high note by claiming a 2-1 triumph over Angelo State at ASU Soccer Field on Friday.
Â
"It was important to find a way to win tonight and we did," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "Sometimes you must beat an opponent at their own game, and we asked that of our team at halftime. Scoring twice by restart was key and something we've trained throughout preseason."
Â
How It Happened:Â The Rangers were deadlocked in a 1-1 tie during the 83rd minute when a foul to freshman forward
Audrey Teague sent her to the penalty line, where she kicked the go-ahead goal past sophomore goalkeeper Kira Miller for the eventual game-winning, 2-1 advantage.
Â
Regis held a 1-0 lead for more than half the match's length until Belles sophomore midfielder Gabby Villagrand's equalizer in the 73rd minute nullified the lead and made the score, 1-1.
Â
RU grabbed its initial advantage early in the game's seventh minute, where freshman defender
Ella Palmer's pass was successfully fielded by redshirt junior defender
Emily Goodson, who scored for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Though the Rangers were outshot by Angelo State in both shots, 11-8, and shots-on-goal, 8-6, Regis scored on a third of its shots-on-goal.
Â
Game Notes: Goodson (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) provided the Rangers a lead for the majority of the game and played the whole 90 minutes. Teague (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) reclaimed the lead for the Rangers with her penalty kick. Palmer (1 A) was credited with the game's only assist. Junior forward
Carly Bych (3 S, 1 SOG) had a team-high in shots for RU. Junior goalkeeper
Julia Coombs (7 SV) earned her first win of the season. Â
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis improves to 1-1-1 with the win and will conclude both its weekend and road trip at St. Edward's (Texas) (1-2) at 12 p.m. MT on Sunday at Lewis-Chen Family Field. The match will also be RU's final test prior to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Â
While Friday provided an impressive win for the Rangers, Belzer hopes to take down another reigning conference champion to close out the weekend.
Â
"We're excited to have beaten last year's Lone Star (conference tournament) champions and now turn our focus to the 2018 Heartland (regular season) champion, St. Edwards, on Sunday in Austin," Belzer said.
