SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Regis University men's and women's cross country teams faced formidable competition during their respective races at the Sacramento State-hosted Capital Cross Challenge, held at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, in which the men finished 18th in the 8k open race while the women settled for 20th in their 6k open event on Saturday.
Sophomore
Bryan Martinez crossed the finish line first for the Rangers on the men's side with his time of 26 minutes, 57.5 seconds to take 124th overall.
Senior
Vincent Frazier was second for Regis, claiming a 154th-place finish with a time of 27:24.3.
Freshman
George Kaftan finished just four places behind Frazier in 158th, clocking in at 27:32.5.
The back-to-back showings of sophomore
Andrew McNamee (30:07.5) and senior
Emilio Tovilla (30:27.2) in 226th and 227th, respectively, completed the scorecard for RU.
Sophomore
Roger Castillo (36:24.5) also competed for the Rangers and took 236th overall.
The Regis women's score sheet was bookended by a pair of freshmen. Freshman
Annika Zenk led the women again with her team-leading time of 23:45.3 to notch a 98th-place showing. Zenk was the only RU runner to have a top-100 finish.
Junior
Sarah Smagacz settled for second among Rangers with her time of 24:25.4, which was good enough for 135th overall.
Seniors
Theodora Zastrocky (25:40.2, 169th) and
Samantha Holland (26:04.9, 175th) took third and fourth, respectively, for the Regis women.
Freshman
Lily Saddoris rounded out the scoring for RU, taking 188th while registering a time of 27:06.6.
The Rangers return home for the Oct. 5 Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunner Invitational, held at Wash Park in Denver.
