DURANGO, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team (10-8, 5-7 RMAC) wrapped up the of third-straight game on the road with a 80-79 loss to the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks (12-6, 6-6 RMAC) on Friday night.
How It Happened: During the first eight minutes of the first half, Regis outscored Fort Lewis 20-10 thanks to a solid defense which caused 10 total turnovers, with seven steals, in the first half. Those turnovers turned into 12 points for the Rangers. With 4:11 remaining in the half, RU enjoyed a 35-25 lead before the Skyhawks started to cut into the lead which dropped to four points, 39-35, at halftime.
The four-point lead quickly evaporated with FLC knocking down a three-pointer and a layup to take their first lead since the first bucket of the game. Regis found their rhythm once again with back-to-back three-pointers from juniors
Donald Gipson and
Brian Dawson, giving the Rangers a five-point lead, 57-52. The lead grew to eight points, 54-46, when senior
Christian Little knocked down a jumper at the 13:26 mark.
Unfortunately for RU a lengthy cold streak allowed the home team to tie the game at 58. The Skyhawks continued their hot shooting, leading to a 76-67 lead, their largest of the game. That would not stop Regis from fighting back. Trailing 80-74, redshirt-freshman
Kevin Ebiriekwe drove the basket, layed in his shot and was fouled on the play. He knocked down his and-one attempt to cut the lead to three, 80-77. FLC had possession, but the Rangers forced a turnover with 15 seconds to go, giving them one more shot to tie the game. A missed three-point attempt turned into a layup for RU, but the two points were not enough, and time expired on the inbounds pass.
