PUEBLO, Colo. – Late comeback attempt foiled by Colorado State University – Pueblo ThunderWolves (6-7, 4-3 RMAC) as the Regis University men's basketball (8-5, 3-4 RMAC) team drops second-straight game to start the new year.
How It Happened: Coming off a loss from the previous night in New Mexico, Regis was looking to get back on track with a win on Saturday night, but the ThunderWolves were not going to go down without a fight. After the first 20 minutes of play, the home team had a 37-35 lead despite the Rangers shooting only 37.1 percent from the field.
The second half was kinder to RU who shot better than 43 percent in the second half, but that could not stop the team from the ThunderWolves jumping out to an 11-point, 66-55, lead with 6:55 remaining in the game. Trailing by nine points, 66-75, things started to get interesting. Regis scored two free throws, then got a three pointer from junior
Brian Dawson, and on next inbounds pass from CSUP, they caused a turnover and got a layup to cut the lead to two points, 75-73 with 47 seconds remaining in the game.
After a missed shot from the home team, the Rangers got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead. RU drew a could on the next offensive possession, but missed both free throws. Regis fouled on the next possession, and the ThunderWolves missed both shots, giving the Rangers another chance to tie or take the lead. However, RU had their shot blocked as they drove to the hoop, and from that point on CSUP closed out the game with free throws down the stretch. The final score ended up 78-74 as time expired.
Game Notes: Four players scored more than 12 points for Regis with senior
Christian Little (6-16 FG) leading the way with 19 points. Sophomore
Toni Rocak had 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting and Dawson added 17 with four trifectas. Gipson was the only other player in double-figures with 12 points.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's basketball team returns to the Regis Field House next weekend to matchup against the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers on January 10 at 7 p.m. followed by a game against the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets on Saturday, January 11 at 5 p.m.
