LAS VEGAS - The Regis softball team dropped two games on the second day of the Desert Stinger tournament losing an early lead against San Francisco State and dropping a tight battle with Central Washington.
They were the first setbacks of the year for the Rangers after opening their season on Friday with a victory over Oklahoma Baptist.Â
San Francisco State Game | How it Happened: The Rangers jumped out to an early six-run lead, but the bats went silent as San Francisco State overcame the deficit to win.
Jessi Case scored twice, Taylor Armitage popped a three-run homer, and Shaelynn Allen's two hits powered the offense for the Rangers. Laura Scheffel and Carly Beard recorded a run and RBI as well.
An error in the bottom of the first kept the inning alive for Armitage who homered to left field for the Rangers first long ball. Run scoring singles prior by Case and Beard put RU up 5-0.
A four-hit bottom of the second capped by RBI singles by Case and Allen gave the Rangers a 7-1 advantage.Â
San Francisco State wasted little time mounting the comeback as they went on to score five runs in the fourth and seven runs in the sixth, to enact the run rule.Â
The Gators' victory was aided by the three home runs and miscues defensively for the Rangers.
Abby Covington (0-1) started in the circle and three Rangers pitched in relief that gave up 12 hits, walked eight and hit four batters.
Game Notes: Armitage, Kara Rodeheaver, and Cortney Sexton pitched in relief… Each team committed three errors… The Rangers had eight hits and four walks…Â
Central Washington Game | How it Happened: The Rangers had a quick turnaround on their second game of the day as they lost a pitching battle against the Wildcats.Â
Regis trailed from the start as they gave up a two-run homer to Alycia Bannan in the first inning.Â
It was the only bad pitch of the day for Rodeheaver who pitched seven strong innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. She was outdueled by a trio of pitchers for Central Washington, who surrendered three hits and struck out seven.
The Rangers cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a wild pitch allowing Maggie Washer to score.Â
Regis had an opportunity again in the seventh inning with two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Carly Gray struck out to end the game.Â
