GUNNISON, Colo. – Riding a two-game winning streak, the Regis University men's basketball team (14-10, 9-9 RMAC) traveled to the Western Slope where they were dealt a loss at the hands of the Western Colorado University Mountaineers (10-14, 7-11 RMAC) 87-71 on Friday evening.
How It Happened: The first half was lopsided in the direction of the home team who built up a 23-point, 53-30, lead behind 55.6 percent shooting from the field, which included nine first-half three-pointers from WCU. The Mountaineers shot 56 percent from behind the arc in the opening half. Regis struggled to get the offense to flow, amounting to only 30 points and a 41.4 percent shooting percentage.
In the second half, the Rangers finally got some of their shots to fall and one main reason was the play of junior
Donald Gipson. Gipson was one of the bright spots in the RU offense as he finished with a 73.3 shooting percentage on the night. Gipson helped Regis outscore WCU 41-34 in the second half, but that still was not enough for the Rangers to secure a comeback.
Game Notes: Gipson poured in a season-high 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting. He knocked down four of his five three-point attempts and also grabbed two rebounds. Senior
Christian Little (11 PTS, 4-10 FG, 3-4 FT) and sophomore
Toni Rocak (11 PTS, 2-6 FG, 7-10 FT) were both held in check by virtue of their recent outings. The rebounding margin tilted heavily in favor of the Mountaineers who won the battle of the boards 41-24.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis men's basketball team will be back in action tomorrow night in Grand Junction when they take on Colorado Mesa University at 7:30 p.m.
