Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rangers force OT with No. 8 Mavericks, but fall in final seconds, Atanasovs and Cartwright reach career-highs

Three Rangers reach double-digits in points

GRAND JUNCTION - The Regis University men's basketball team (2-6) had their second game in consecutive nights versus the No. 8 Colorado Mesa Mavericks (10-0) in Grand Junction. Last night, the Rangers ended a five-game skid by beating the Westminster College (Utah) Griffins 80-74. It was no small task taking on the Mavericks, they've been beating their opponents by an average of ten points this season.

How it Happened: Regis spent most of the first half battling from behind, but never gave Colorado Mesa a comfortable lead. RU did take their first lead of the game after a big layup from junior forward Alex Cartwright to make the score 15-14 ten minutes in. The Rangers were only able to hold onto that lead for a short time because two minutes later, Maverick guard David Rico buried a three to give the lead back to Colorado Mesa.

The first 20 minutes ended with the Mavericks having a six point advantage over Regis. As the second half started, it seemed like Colorado Mesa might run away with the game. They led by as much as ten, but RU fought hard and eventually closed the gap to just one point after a layup by RS sophomore forward Kevin Ebiriekwe at the 6:55 mark. It continued to be a back-and-forth affair until a huge 3-pointer from GS guard Troy Brady gave the Rangers a 69-66 lead with under two minutes to play. The Mavericks responded well by draining a 3-pointer to tie up the game at 69 points. Nobody was able to score after that, so the game was sent to overtime.

In OT, Regis took the lead immediately after buckets from both Cartwright and senior guard Brian Dawson. From there, RU held onto a one point lead until a final bucket from Colorado Mesa with just four seconds left sealed their victory. The final score was 81-80.

Game Notes: Cartwright (9-12 FG, 1-2 3-PT) surpassed his previous career-high of 17 points by scoring 19 tonight. He originally set his record while playing for the Citrus College Owls last year. Dawson (11-27 FG, 3-12 3-PT, 4-5 FT) kept his hot hand going as the guard dropped 32 points and led the team in rebounds and assists. He had six boards and tied his career-high in assists with seven. The Rangers continue to lead the RMAC in forced turnovers and tonight was no different, they caused 18 for the Mavericks. Freshman Forward Nik Atanasovs (2-3 FG, 2-2 3-PT, 1-2 FT) set himself a career-high in points with seven.

Up Next for the Rangers: There's no rest for the weary, the squad will finish their road streak with a battle against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (3-3) on Jan. 26. You can watch that game here.
