DENVER – The Regis University volleyball team (15-4, 10-1 RMAC) reached double-digits in their winning streak (10 games) after they downed the Chadron State College Eagles (4-15, 2-10 RMAC) in three-straight sets, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-10.
How It Happened: Regis' got stronger offensively, and stronger defensively as the match progressed. They won the first set 25-16 which was their smallest margin of victory in any of the sets tonight. However, they registered their most kills in the first set (18) behind a .378 hitting percentage. The set was close until the Rangers opened a 14-6 lead with a 4-0 run midway through the set. Another 4-0 run towards the end of the set put the set out of reach, 23-15, and then a kill from sophomore
Halle Theis and an attack error from the Eagles gave RU a 1-0 set advantage.
Regis improved their hitting percentage to .406 in the second set and the defense got on the board with two blocks, holding CSC to a .056 hitting percentage. Though they committed three service errors in the second set, the Rangers had another big 5-0 run to take a 15-7 lead which gave them a boost. Each time the Eagles scored a point, RU was there to rattle off multiple points in response. With a 22-12 lead, Regis closed out the set with three-straight points capped off with a kill from graduate student
Caitlyn Burroway and a massive set-ending block from juniors
Mara LeGrand and
Nadine Burbrink, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
It did not take long for the Rangers to close out the match in the third set. Trailing 1-2 early on, RU scored 10 consecutive points which featured seven kills, and four service aces from Regis. Burroway and redshirt-senior
Rebecca Abrahamson accounted for six of the kills and senior
Rachel Siurek had the other. LeGrand had all three of the service aces during the rally. A few points later, Regis enjoyed an 8-point unanswered run which gave them a huge 20-5 lead. The last scoring run of the match came from the Rangers who closed out the set with a kill from Burbrink, a service ace from junior
Anna Allsberry and a kill from Burroway. RU walked away with an astounding 25-10 win in the final set.
Game Notes: Regis had one of their most powerful offensive performances of the season as they hit .406 for the match with only 10 attack errors on the night. Their serving was on point with seven total service aces, and their serve receiving was also solid as they did not account for any reception errors. Burroway posted 15 kills (.500 H%) and 12 digs for her fourth-straight double-double. Burbrink tallied 11 kills (.444 H%) with a block. Siurek chipped in with eight kills (.467 H%) and she also had a block. LeGrand, who continues to find success at the net on her dump shots, finished with four kills (.800 H%) on five total attack attempts, but even more impressively, she had 42 assists in only three sets (14.0 per set). LeGrand also accounted for three of the team's seven service aces.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University volleyball team will return to the Regis Field House tomorrow at 3 p.m. to take on the seventh-ranked ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (17-2, 10-1 RMAC) in a fight for the number two spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RAMC) standings.
