DENVER – One night after head coach
Joel List captured his 100
th career win, the Regis University volleyball team (11-4, 6-1 RMAC) met up with the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves (12-3, 6-1 RMAC) in the Regis Field House. Regis disposed of the ThunderWolves in four sets, winning 25-23, 16-25, 25-21 and 25-23.
How it Happened: In the first set of the match, it was a back-and-forth bout, with each team swinging hard and swinging often. Both sides had 15 kills in the set, with the Rangers outhitting CSUP .256% - .179% on the way to a 25-23 win.
The ThunderWolves would bite back in the second set as RU lost their focus and fell behind after three-straight service aces from CSUP. At the end of that run from the visitors, Regis trailed 19-11 with a lot of work to do. Though they cut into the lead, the home team was not able to stop the ThunderWolves who tied the match at one set apiece with a 16-25 win over the Rangers.
In the critical third set, the teams continued to play an even match. Both teams hit above .217% in the set, but it was RU that did damage with their swings. They tallied 18 kills in the third set alone with a .245 hitting percentage. CSUP only had 13 kills in the set. Neither team had a service ace, and the ThunderWolves errored four times on their serve. The third set went to the strong Ranger offense 25-21 in set three, giving them a 2-1 set lead in the match.
The fourth and final set of the night was very entertaining. Both teams had their best offensive sets of the night with RU earning 18 kills for the second-straight set, and CSUP tallying 15. Each team registered hitting percentages over .300 with the visitors posting .314% and the home team blasting a .368 hitting percentage when they needed it the most. Trailing 22-21 in the set, graduate student
Caitlyn Burroway and senior
Rachel Siurek put down back-to-back kills to take the lead 23-22. A kill from the ThunderWolves knotted the score back at 23. Junior
Nadine Burbrink responded with a massive swing in the middle to bring up match point for Regis. CSUP had an opportunity to tie it back up, but their attack attempt did not clear the net and the Rangers picked up the 25-23 match sealing win in set four.
Game Notes: Burroway, who has been on a tear lately, set a new career-high with 27 kills in this one. She just recently set a career-high with 22 kills in a match against Black Hills last week, but she went off for 27 in this pivotal match. She also had 13 digs in the match for a double-double and had a .317 hitting percentage. Siurek came on late when the team needed some points. She had 10 kills, one block and two digs in the effort. Bubrink tallied nine kills with a hitting percentage of .350 which was a team-high. Junior
Mara LeGrand made another case for RMAC Setter of the Week with another great performance. She had 42 assists, 18 digs, and added three kills with one block against CSUP. Junior
Haley Kennedy also made a case to be considered RMAC Player of the Week with her defense. She had 21 digs, six assists, and two service aces in the win. She averaged 5.25 digs per set in the match. The final hitting percentage for the team was .245 while their opponents were held to .227, a slight advantage that paid dividends in the end.
Up Next for the Rangers: The next matches for the Regis University volleyball team will be on the road as they travel to Las Vegas, N.M. to face the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands University on Friday, October 15 at 7p.m. The next night, the team will battle the Adams State University Grizzlies in Alamosa, Colorado at 6 p.m. before returning home.
