Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rangers Suffer 71-59 Setback to Greyhounds

DENVER - The Regis University women's basketball team (2-1) faced the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds (3-0), Wednesday night at the Regis Field House. The squad was coming off a big 66-58 win over St. Mary's (Texas) the previous Saturday. Tonight however, things didn't go Regis' way as the team couldn't overcome ENMU's 46 percent shooting from both the field and behind the arc.

How it Happened: The Greyhounds struck first with a layup and two points from the line, but RU responded quickly with an 8-0 run to take the lead five minutes into the contest. ENMU stayed resilient and the teams were neck-and-neck through the first period. After junior Sydney Speights banged around in the paint for a bucket to put RU up 11-9, ENMU tied the game up 11 with a layup of their own. The two teams continued trading blows before the Greyhounds led at the end of the first, 16-14.

As the second period settled in, ENMU began to separate themselves from Regis. A 10-5 run put them in front, 29-19. But, sophomore Erin Fry killed their momentum swing with a 3-pointer just before the half ended.

Junior Josey Ryan opened the third period for the Rangers with another triple which was followed by Speights getting two in the paint to cut the ENMU lead to seven. From there though, the Greyhounds took control by out-scoring RU 20-7 by the time the period ended.

The Rangers turned it up in the fourth and even out-scored ENMU 25-13, but the clock was against RU and the comeback was unsuccessful. RU fell, 71-59.

Game Notes: Freshman Athena Saragoza (6-13 FG, 3-7 3-PT) was all over the court for Regis as she led the team in scoring (18 pts) and had two rebounds. Ryan (3-9 FG, 2-8 3-PT) was close behind with 13 points of her own and nabbed two boards and a steal. Fry (2-5 FG, 2-4 3-PT) had a team-high two steals and scored seven points. Graduate student Tashika Burrell (1-7 FG, 1-6 3-PT) scored six points and did a great job of getting her teammates the ball with four assists. Speights (2-4 FG) grabbed 10 boards while senior Erin Stroberg had six.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU will return to action this Sunday when they travel to Colorado Springs to take on the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (0-2) at 2 p.m.
