DENVER - The No. 4 Regis University women's soccer team (13-5-0, 10-3-0 RMAC) started the their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament run with a statement win over the No. 5 CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves (9-8-1, 8-4-1 RMAC), Sunday afternoon at the Regis Match Pitch. The Ranger's offense overpowered Pueblo as they cruised to a 4-1 victory and advanced to the semifinals.
How it Happened: Just three minutes into the contest, Regis struck first when freshman
Sarah Wynn lofted the ball into the ThunderWolves box on a corner. Junior
Madison Hand was in the perfect position to head the ball into the net which gave RU the 1-0 lead.
From there, the Rangers didn't slow down and kept their forwards upfield. In the 14th minute of play, a Pueblo foul was called in their own box, giving Regis a chance to take a 2-0 lead off a PK. Junior
Kelby Kuo lined up for the attempt and promptly buried it.
Not even a minute after the kickoff, junior
Ella Palmer found Kuo racing down the middle of the field, onside. Kuo's speed pushed her through the ThunderWolves defensive line and she gently tapped the ball in the net, out of reach of the keeper's hands to give RU the 3-0 buffer.
Even with the 3-0 lead at the half, the team never got complacent. The defense continued to make stops and the forwards and mids were keeping the ball in the Pueblo defensive zone. In the 57th minute, Wynn received a great ball and raced down the sideline towards the Pueblo goal. She then sent a beautiful cross to teammate senior
Gia Lemley who cut back and drilled a shot in the goal, making the lead 4-0.
The Rangers would concede an own goal in the 88th minute, but that was the only slipup on the day as they were nearly perfect through the full 90.
Game Notes: Senior keeper
Katelyn Martin had a light day of work as she registered three saves. Wynn has the tenth most assists per-game in the nation and added three more to her total today. Kuo (4) and junior
Ella Palmer (4) led the team in shots while Kuo brought her goal total to 13 on the season. Regis outshot Pueblo by an impressive margin of 21 (12) - 10 (3).
Up Next for the Rangers: The team advanced to the semifinals of the 2021 RMAC Tournament with the victory. They'll face Colorado Mesa (14-3-0, 10-2-0 RMAC) in Grand Junction this Wednesday. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
