Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite strong second half, Rangers fall to Mavericks 73-63

Three Rangers reach double-digits in scoring

DENVER - The Regis University men's basketball team (3-8) hosted its first matchup since Jan. 29 at the Regis Field House Friday evening. The team took on the No. 7 nationally ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks (15-1).

How it Happened: Regis started out at somewhat of a slow pace compared to the Mavericks. A 17-4 run to start the game for CMU kept the Rangers on their toes. The score was 22-9 Mesa ten minutes into the game. However, Regis finished the half strong. Senior guard Brian Dawson and sophomore guard Aaron Bokol got things going by aiding RU on a 15-5. The half ended with a score of 42-28 in favor of Mesa.

The second half was when the Rangers started to improve their shooting. A 10-0 run capped by a huge 3-pointer from graduate student guard Troy Brady closed the gap to single-digits with eight minutes to play. Despite their efforts though, Regis couldn't overcome the consistent ten-point buffer the Mavericks had. Regis fought until the final buzzer, but the final score was 73-63, CMU.

Game Notes: Three rangers scored in double-digits tonight. Dawson led the team with 24, Bokol nabbed ten and sophomore forward Alex Cartwright also had ten. Sophomore guard Will Cranston-Lown is healthy again after an injury, he played 30 minutes and had nine points and four rebounds in his return. Cartwright had a career-high five rebounds in tonight's game.

Head coach Brady Bergeson participated in NABC's "Towel Initiative" to pay tribute to the late Georgetown head basketball coach, John Thompson Jr.. Here's what Bergeson had to say about honoring Thompson tonight.

"The NABC has done a great job taking the initiative to honor coach Thompson in the age of reckoning that we're in right now with social justice. Coach Thompson did a lot to push forward social justice and I think it's a really worthwhile time to honor him as he's passed away now. But, he was a guy that didn't just talk it, he put it into action"

"One of the defining moments in his career to me was when he decided to boycott games due to the NCAA legislation that he felt was going to unfairly discriminate against kids of color. So, he boycotted two Big East games and walked off the floor. There was actually a big groundswell of support from other coaches in the league that followed him and he won that battle. He was a guy who stood for a lot of the right things and was the first african american to win a NCAA title. I give a lot of credit to him and the NABC for the idea".

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis returns to action tomorrow evening as they take on Westminster College at the Regis Field House at 8 p.m.. You can watch that game by clicking here
