DENVER – The 20
th-ranked Regis University volleyball team (4-2, 4-1 RMAC) displayed some very impressive volleyball this weekend as they needed only six sets to take down the Westminster College Griffins (3-5, 2-4 RMAC) and the Adams State Grizzlies (0-6, 0-5 RMAC).
Regis vs. Westminster College
How It Happened: This contest was fully controlled by Regis from the opening set. The Rangers came out firing and hit .406 in the first set with 16 kills and only three errors. The offense paved the way in the opening set, earning a 25-12 opening set win.
The next set did not produce as high of a hitting percentage for RU, but they still managed to score 18 of their 25 points from kills. Regis had a .217 hitting percentage in the second frame and took a 2-0 set lead by a score of 25-18.
The final set of the morning battle was a 25-17 win for the Rangers who once again only committed three errors in the set, earning 15 kills and a .375 hitting percentage.
Game Notes: Sophomore
Londyn Johnson had a breakout game in this one as she went for a match-high 12 kills, bolstering a remarkable .611 hitting percentage as 13 of her 18 attacks ended in a point for the home team. Senior
Caitlyn Burroway finished with 12 kills and a .267 hitting percentage.
Sophomore
Mara LeGrand averaged 11.3 assists per set in the morning bout with 34 assists, adding 11 digs for her third-straight double-double. Sophomore
Haley Kennedy led the way with 14 digs while her sister
Hannah Kennedy added 11 of her own. Four players registered two blocks apiece in the match.
Regis vs. Adams State
How It Happened: In the afternoon matchup with the Adams State University Grizzlies, Regis may not have won each set as handily as they did in the morning match, but the offense was more efficient overall in the match. In set one, RU fell behind 11-5 early on, but they battled back to tie it at 12 with a 5-0 run a few moments later. The team finished the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-19 for the come from behind opening set win.
Set two featured zero lead changes and only two tie scores as Regis rolled to a 25-15 second set win behind a .308 hitting percentage, which was not as high as the .342 hitting percentage they opened up with in the first set.
Winners of their last eight sets dating back to their match against UC-Colorado Springs on February 7, the Rangers were looking to win their ninth-consecutive set to put away the Grizzlies for the three-set sweep. That is exactly what they did as they posted their best hitting percentage of the match (.433) in the final set of the day. Though Adams State also posted their best hitting percentage of the match (.265), RU came away with the 25-22 win in set three.
Game Notes: Junior
Rachel Siurek had a match-high 13 kills, which set a new season-high for her in 2020-21. She also had a season-high .632 hitting percentage as 13 of her 19 attacks went down for kills, and she only committed a single error. Burroway added 10 kills and Johnson continued her dominant play with eight kills (.583 hitting %) and a block. It was the passing of LeGrand that really stood out in this match as the sophomore setter had 39 assists in three sets of action, which is a 13.0 assists per set average.
Haley Kennedy also performed very well in this match with 17 digs (5.7 digs per set) and three assists as the libero.
Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 20 ranked Regis University volleyball team heads to Black Hills State University this Thursday, Feb. 25 to take on the Yellow Jackets, and two days later they visit the Eagles of Chadron State College for battle on Saturday evening.
