DENVER - The Regis University men's basketball team (4-9) faced off against the Colorado Christian Cougars (1-14) Monday night. The Rangers battled from behind and a stellar second-half performance propelled Regis to the victory!
How it Happened: In the first half, the Rangers took an immediate lead on their first possession via a 3-pointer from graduate guard
Troy Brady. But, a quick 10-2 run from CCU gave them a 15-11 lead five minutes into the game. The Cougars extended their lead to 44-30 at the end of the first 20 minutes.
The second half was when Regis really came alive. They started out with a 13-3 run and seven of those points came from sophomore guard
Aaron Bokol, who truly had himself a night.Â
Then, the cougars took the lead back with 12 minutes left in the game, but senior guard
Brian Dawson nailed a jumper to give RU a 51-50 lead. Following that, redshirt sophomore guard/forward
Kevin Ebiriekwe crashed the glass for a huge rebound, passed the ball to Bokol who was fouled in transition on a shot attempt, forcing CCU to use a timeout, which swung the momentum in Regis' favor.Â
RU's tough defense was what allowed the team to finish strong. A five-minute 13-0 run kept the Cougars at bay; the game finished with a score of 76-56, Regis.Â
Here's what head coach
Brady Bergeson had to say about tonight's game.
"Well, I hope it's a nice confidence boost for us. Consistency has been one of the things we've been trying to bang on and improve. Our swing seems to be pretty high and low at times as a group, we've got to level out that graph line to get the best out of this group. We're working pretty hard on that and we've got to grow into that as a team. So,
Aaron Bokol has really refocused himself over the past couple of weeks. The past couple of games he's been tremendous. This might have been the best game of his career here, he did a little bit of everything. Defensively, on the boards, he was really hard to guard and he was just really a tough omnipresence that we needed, especially in that second half. We're really proud of him"
Game Notes: Despite being down by as much as 16 points, RU fought hard to force a 27 point swing. Regis played disciplined basketball by only committing nine fouls in the game.Â
The Rangers improved their shooting from 50 percent in the first half, to an impressive 71 percent in the second.
Ebiriekwe laid down two monster slam-dunks, he had ten points and five rebounds.Â
Bokol had his second straight double-double, he led the team with 24 points (a career-high) and 10 boards.Â
Sophomore guard
Will Cranston-Lown was second on the team in scoring with 20 points. He also had four rebounds and four assists.Â
