DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University softball team (5-1, 2-0 RMAC) faced off against the Adam's State Grizzlies (0-5, 0-2 RMAC) Saturday afternoon in the first doubleheader of a four-game series. The Ranger's impressive batting enabled them to score double-digit runs in both victories.
Game One | How it Happened: Graduate student
Taylor Armitage started in the circle for Regis. In the first inning, the Grizzlies capitalized off a double to center field which scored one.
RU's first at-bat sent home a total of six runs off of three hits. Junior Jessi Case was sent home via a single up the middle. Then, a big triple from Armitage brought three more runs in. Armitage proceeded to steal home, then, sophomore Shayelyn Allen scored on the throw after a failed pick-off attempt, which made the score 6-1, Rangers.
ASU scored four more runs through four innings, but a strong offensive 5th inning from Regis put up three more runs.
Sophomore Kara Rodeheaver relieved Armitage in the top of the sixth inning and only allowed one run. She finished the top of the seventh by not allowing anyone on base and striking out her final batter. That was it for the first game, the final score was 12-5, RU.
Game Notes: Lead off batter Case went 1-3 at the plate, but her one hit was a triple through the right side. She also had a game-high four assists at shortstop. Senior
Kynra Nelson and freshman
Ashlynn Balliet each went 3-4 in the box. Junior
Madison Flores stood tall at the plate and went 2-3. Balliet also had a homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning. Armitage had a game-high three RBI's and improved her pitching record to 3-0.
Game Two | How it Happened: Freshman
Megan Loveland got the go-ahead to start in the circle for the Rangers in game two. She allowed no runs through the first three innings, but the Grizzlies got the bats going by scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
However, Regis wasn't cold after the intermission and recorded five runs up to that point. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, home runs from Balliet and graduate student Jade Loe sent in three runs to make the score 8-4, RU.
Rodeheaver was sent in to pitch for Loveland in the top of the sixth. Then, in the bottom of the inning, freshman Carryn Leto singled through the right side to send home freshman Victoria McMains. Next, Leto advanced to third base after a wild pitch. Following that with the bases loaded, Nelson walked, which in turn sent Leto home to make the score 12-5, Rangers.
Rodeheaver finished the game by allowing two hits and two runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough for ASU to come back. The game ended with a final score of 12-7, Regis.
Game Notes: Loveland was awarded the win and improved her record to 3-0. Freshman
Katherine Raper went 2-3 in the box and scored twice. Balliet, Nelson and graduate student
Laura Scheffel all had a pair of RBI's which were game-highs. Loe had two home runs, Balliet and Scheffel had one each. Case led the team in assists with three and Leto led the team in putouts with six.
