#21 Rangers play complimentary volleyball in win over Cougars

LeGrand posts 33 assists

DENVER - The No. 21 Regis University volleyball team (10-4, 10-2 RMAC) squared off against the Colorado Christian Cougars (5-9, 5-7 RMAC) Tuesday evening at the Regis Field House. The game was a thrilling 3-0 sweep by Regis that put the team back to their winning ways. Final scores from tonight's matchup: 25-16, 25-21, 25-11.

How it Happened: The Rangers came out swinging in the first set as the squad posted a .250 hitting percentage, holding CCU to .026, flying past the Cougars in set one. Sophomore Mara LeGrand helped her attackers out immensely with her signature assists, she recorded 15 in the first set alone. Junior Rachel Siurek put the set away with a kill on set point, sophomore libero Haley Kennedy picked up the assist, making it 1-0, RU after one.

In set two, CCU came out looking to steal one from Regis as they kept it close. But, the Rangers' impressive offense created some separation from the Cougars. With RU holding a one point advantage at 4-3, Sophomore Halle Theis found the floor off an assist from LeGrand, which capped off a 3-0 run from Regis. The Rangers were able to pull away again though with the help of a .429 hitting percentage. Three huge blocks helped, as did five kills from junior Rachel Siurek. RU put the second set away, 25-21.

In the third set, Regis raced out to a 9-0 run and extended their lead to 13-4. Again, LeGrand came through big with eight assists. In the set, the Rangers had their best hitting percentage of the evening (.500), while the team's strong play forced CCU to a hitting percentage of zero. The runs continued and the game concluded, 25-11 in RU's favor. Sweep secured.

Here's what head coach Joel List had to say about tonight's win, "We had a good effort by all of our players tonight. We needed to be efficient on our side of the net and we were able to do that for the most part,"

He continued, "Our middles were able to put up some good numbers, so kudos to them, and without ball control and distribution from Mara LeGrand, that wouldn't have happened. All in all, it was a great team win"

Game Notes: LeGrand played very well in the match, posting 33 assists (11.0 assists per set), bringing her total throughout the season to a whopping 534.

Siurek led the team in kills with 12, and sophomore Ayala Plummer was a close second with 11. The pair also scored 12.5 points each, which were match-highs.

Redhsirt-sophomore Hannah Kennedy aced her serve three times and her sister Haley totaled 13 digs. Senior Caitlyn Burroway also had 13 digs.

The team's .364 hitting percentage was the second-highest this season. Just ahead is a .388 performance in Regis' sweep over Chadron State on Feb. 26.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 21 ranked Regis University women's volleyball team will conclude the regular season this Friday when the team takes on the No. 4 ranked MSU Denver Roadrunners (11-1, 9-1 RMAC) at home. First serve will be at 7 p.m.
