Game Recap: Softball |

Regis drops both games in first doubleheader versus Mesa

DENVER - The Regis University softball team (11-5, 8-4 RMAC) returned to action after over a two-week hiatus from play due to a plethora of postponements. Today, the team took on the No. 20 Colorado Mesa Mavericks (14-0, 14-0 RMAC) in a doubleheader, which is a part of a four-game series.

Game One | How it Happened: Graduate student Taylor Armitage started in the circle for the Rangers in game one.

In the first inning, neither team was able to get a hit. But, in the second, the Mavericks got things going by scoring nine runs. Sophomore Kara Rodeheaver was called in to relieve Armitage, who was able to stop the bleeding.

Regis didn't score in the third inning, but CMU added another run when it was their turn to bat, making the score 10-0 heading into the fourth. It looked as if Regis might get mercied by the Mavericks, but a seven-run offensive explosion by RU in the bottom of the fifth inning kept the game close.

The first of the seven runs was scored by freshman Victoria McMains when senior Kynra Nelson singled to the shortstop. Then, a bases-loaded double by graduate student Jade Loe allowed Nelson to score, as well as Junior Madison Flores, who was on third. Freshman Katherine Raper was up to bat next and she singled up the middle, which in-turn sent home Nelson and Loe.

CMU was forced to change pitchers with two outs left in the inning. Following that, sophomore Shayelyn Allen slammed a two-run double, scoring Junior Carly Beard and Raper. The inning ended with a score of 10-7, Mavericks.

The Ranger's last-ditch effort to tie the game fell short as the team was only able to score one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game concluded with CMU on top, 10-7.

Game Notes: Despite the loss, Regis had ten total hits compared to CMU's seven. Nelson went 2-4 in the batter's box and had one RBI. Loe also went 2-4, but had two RBI. Raper had two RBI as well while Allen led the team in putouts with six and Flores led the team in assists with three. Armitage's record fell to 5-1.

Game Two | How it Happened: The second game proved to be another tough outing for RU as the team was shutout by Maverick pitcher Paige Adair.

With freshman Megan Loveland in the circle, CMU took an immediate 2-0 lead to start the game. Then, in the second, Mesa added another run to make the score 3-0.

After a solo homer from the Mavericks in the top of the fifth, head coach Nicole Thompson sent in freshman Alexis Kemp to pitch, but CMU was able to add two more runs before the half-inning was over.

No more runs were scored by either team in the final 2.5 innings, and the game ended with a score of 6-0, Mesa.

Game Notes: Freshman Ashlynn Balliet was 1-2 at the plate while Loe was 1-3. Again, Allen led the team in putouts. This time, the first baseman tied the game-high with 12. Loveland's record is now 4-2.
