GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Regis University softball team (19-16, 16-14 RMAC) traveled west to Grand Junction to compete in the 2021 RMAC Softball Tournament, Thursday afternoon. The Rangers took on the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (22-13-1, 20-10-1 RMAC) in the first round.
Regis fell after a hard fought game, 5-2.
How It Happened: Graduate student
Taylor Armitage (13-4) started in the circle for RU. She was coming off an impressive four-win week, which gave her RMAC Pitcher of the Week recognition.
The first runs of the game came from Mines in the bottom of the second. The Orediggers plated one off a wild pitch, then added a couple more on a two RBI single to make the score 3-0.
Later in the bottom of the third, a solo homer from Mines gave them a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, an Oredigger RBI single increased their lead to 5-0.Â
In the top of the sixth inning, the Rangers finally got on the board when freshman
Victoria McMains scored on a fielding error by the catcher. Later on in the inning, junior
Jessi Case scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, making the score 5-2.
Regis had one more opportunity to score some much needed runs in the top of the seventh inning, but to no avail.Â
Game Notes: Armitage was 1-2 in the batter's box. In the circle, only two of her runs were earned. She also led the team in assists with five.
Case was 1-4 and scored once.
Junior
Carly Beard came in the game as a pinch hitter and had a nice single to left field.
McMains was 1-1 and scored once.
Sophomore
Logan Taylor led the team in putouts with five.Â
