DENVER - The Regis University women's soccer team (2-0) squared off against the Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm (0-2) Monday afternoon in the team's home-opener. Regis is on a hot start this season as the Rangers just bested Minot State 3-1 this past Friday. Today, RU put on a goal-scoring clinic and coasted past the Crimson Storm, 10-1.
How it Happened: Just six minutes into the game, junior
Kelby Kuo got the ball rolling for the Rangers off an assist from junior
Ella Palmer. Later in the 20th minute, Palmer and Kuo would flip-flop. This time, Palmer found the back of the net off an assist from Kuo, increasing the team's lead to 2-0.
RU's freshmen were huge in today's game. But freshman
Sarah Wynn very well could have been the fastest player on the pitch. In the 37th minute, Wynn scored the first goal of her Regis career off a double assist from senior
Kyra Midroy and junior
Audrey Teague.
Just a few minutes later, Teague got a goal of her own with assists credited to senior
Alyssa Barela and Wynn, making their lead 4-0.
Then three minutes after halftime, freshman
Stella Straubing kicked her Regis career off with an unassisted goal, ballooning the team's lead to 5-0.
Then, yet another freshman got the first goal of her Regis career. This time, freshman
Alex Baer scored in the 53rd minute and was assisted by Kuo. Just a couple of short minutes later, Wynn scored again. This time she was assisted by Straubing, making the score 7-0.
Next, Kuo kept it coming with another goal in the 62nd minute and was assisted by Barela. Then, sophomore
Sophia Leone got her first goal of the season and was assisted by Wynn.
SNU would finally get on the board in the 80th minute of play, erasing the possibility of a shutout. However, a quick-start kickoff allowed junior
Madison Hand to get on the board in the 81st minute. She was assisted by sophomore
Jillian Skurcenski. The final lopsided score was 10-1, Rangers.
Game Notes: This is the first time since Oct. 2, 2009 vs Nebraska-Kearney that Regis has scored 10 goals in a regular-season game. This is also the first time since Oct. 13, 2017 vs Black Hills State that RU has recorded more than 39 shots. Today, the team recorded 41 (22).
Kuo and Wynn led the team with a pair of goals each. Teague tied her career-high in shots with six today. Wynn had a game-high seven shots.
Kuo, Barela, and Wynn led the team in assists. They all had two a piece.
Senior keeper
Katelyn Martin allowed no goals through 60 minutes of play and tallied two saves. Sophomore keeper
Maren Clark came in to relieve Martin in the 60th minute and earned three saves.
