40 points off turnovers and a 13-0 run help Regis secure a 91-84 win over CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A back-and-forth game between the Regis University women's basketball team and the Colorado Christian University Cougars came to a head as the Rangers battled to bring home the win against their crosstown rival, 91-84.

The Rangers improve to 6-5 overall, and 3-2 in the RMAC. The Cougars are now 6-6 oveall and 2-4 in conference play. Regis' 91 points are the most scored by the women since Feb 26, 2022 against Adams State University.

How It Happened: While the Rangers and Cougars traded the lead 12 different times, a 13-0 run in the back half of the third quarter and 40 points off of turnovers would help Regis secure the win.

The Rangers wasted no time getting started, jumping to an early 10-3 lead within the first four minutes of the game. Regis' defense would play lights out for the rest of the first quarter, limiting the Cougars to shooting 30 percent (6-for-20) from the field.

The Cougars would end up taking their first lead of the game after a layup from Christine Curry put them ahead, 19-18. The two teams would trade blows throughout the second quarter with the lead changing six different times but finished on a 5-0 run from the Rangers to put them ahead, 37-33.

Senior Morgan L. Smith triggered the 13-0 run that started in the last five minutes of the third. Two free throws and a layup from Smith put the Rangers up 50-49 with 4:28 remaining. By the time the run ended, the Rangers were up by six going into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars would not get any closer than five points for the rest of the night as the Rangers inflated their lead to as many as 15 points before wrapping the game up at 91-84.

Smith earned her first double-double of the season scoring 13 points and securing 11 rebounds over the night.

Sophomore guard Athena Saragoza led the Rangers with 17 points and going 4-8 from the three-point line.

McKinney-native Erin Fry, senior Sam Deem, and graduate student Erin Stroberg all made double-digit contributions to the Rangers win, with Fry scoring 16, and Stroberg and Deem both scoring 14.

Game Notes:

  • Regis outscored CCU in second chance points, 18-11
  • 41 of Regis' 91 points came from turnovers
  • The Rangers visited the free throw line 30 different times, going 23-30
