Rangers rally late to earn 2-1 road win over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team received a late goal from senior forward Kelby Kuo to knock off Adams State University on Sunday, completing a crucial six-point weekend for the team to open RMAC conference play.

Regis (3-4-1 overall, 2-0 RMAC) joins UCCS as the only RMAC teams to be 2-0 through the opening weekend, while the loss dropped Adams State to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC.

"Getting those three points was crucial. No matter how you get them, every single one of them is so valuable," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "I'm super proud of the girls for digging deep today, second game of the road trip, and this is a really positive start for us in conference play."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Despite possessing the ball much of the first half, the Rangers were unable to break through the Grizzlies defense until the second half. Just two minutes into the final 45 minutes, senior defenseman Allison Warta was able to thread a pass to true freshman Natalie Bunch, who was able to get a head on the cross and put Regis up 1-0 in the 47th minute.

It was the first career goal for Bunch and the first point of 2022 for Warta.

"Our message at halftime was to come out with more energy and aggressiveness in front of goal. Allison played a brilliant ball pretty quick into the half and Natalie had a lovely finish," Frykholm said. "It was a beautiful combination that really got us going in the second half."

The Rangers maintained their 1-0 lead until the 67th minute when Adams State was able to sneak a goal past senior goalkeeper Katelyn Martin, who stopped two of the three shots she faced, to even the score at 1-1.

Regis was able to recover, though, and reclaim the lead just seven minutes later when sophomore Claire Faulkner fed Kuo, who netted what proved to be the game-winner at the 73:26 mark.

It was the second goal of the weekend for Kuo, the team's scoring leader in 2021, after she had been held off the scoresheet through the team's first six matches.

"That's what you want from your team leaders; to find those moments to put a game away," Frykholm said. "Claire served a nice ball into the box, there was a little scrum in there and Kelby was the first person to it. It's one of those goals that isn't the prettiest, but came because of relentless effort. It came at a big time from a big player and we're happy to see Kelby score and get on the scoresheet multiple games in a row."

UP NEXT: Regis will look to continue its winning ways when the team returns home next week for Blue & Gold week matchups against rival MSU Denver and Black Hills State University.

The Rangers square off against the Roadrunners at 7 p.m. Thursday under the lights at the Regis Turf Fields before concluding the weekend with an 11 a.m. match against Black Hills State on Sunday.

"Huge match against MSU Denver on Thursday. Obviously, there is a bit of extreme emotion in that rivalry game. They're a very good team and it's going to take everything from us to match their aggression," Frykholm said. "I think this weekend, we learned a lot about the energy and commitment it takes to score goals and put games away. We're focused on applying the lessons we've learned from every game as we move forward into next week."
