Rangers fall to Mountaineers in high-scoring Friday matinee

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team dominated the scoring chances on Friday. But, unfortunately for the Rangers, it was the visiting Western Colorado Mountaineers who were more efficient with theirs as Regis was nabbed, 3-2, to open its final home stand.

Regis (10-4-1 overall, 6-2-1 RMAC) outshot the Mountaineers (2-10-2, 2-6-0 RMAC) by a 27-6 margin, but only 10-4 in shots on goal Friday.

"I thought we played some high-quality soccer at times, generated a lot of scoring chances, but if your conversion rate is 2-for-27; it just has to be better than that," said Regis head coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We lacked a little quality, especially in the first half, in the final end. I think we all felt we had 4-5 really good chances to put the game out of reach. But credit to Western for being well-organized and tough to beat."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis tallied 14 of their 27 shots in the first half, but were put behind the 8-ball early as Western Colorado produced the game's first goal in the 14th minute and enjoyed the 1-0 lead at the break.

The Rangers came out energized in the second half, evening the game at 1-1 in the 54th minute when junior Stella Straubing punched home a crossing pass from fellow junior Alex Baer to get Regis on the scoreboard.

Just six minutes later, Regis would take its first lead of the match on a header from freshman Madeline Gardner — her ninth of the fall — courtesy of another perfectly placed cross from Regis points leader Natalie Bunch.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, despite another lopsided 13-4 shots advantage in the final 45 minutes, they were unable to produce an insurance goal, opening the door for Western Colorado to stay tight in the closing minutes.

The Mountaineers found the equalizer in the 78th minute, taking advantage of a hand ball call in the box and scoring on a penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2.

Western Colorado, which came into the game second in the RMAC in corner kick opportunities, then recaptured the lead on a set piece in the 87th minute to salt away the 3-2 final.

"I was really happy with how responded early in the second half. And I think the most frustrating thing is we dug out of that 1-0 hole to take the lead before giving up two goals, which is what happened against UCCS as well," Frykholm said. "Those set piece moments are really hard because we didn't really give up many chances in the run of play. But they got us on those two pieces."

UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to shake off the loss and finish this final three-game stretch of the regular season strong, starting with Sunday's 1 p.m. contest against Fort Lewis College on Senior Day.

"You never want to lose, but it's what you do after that loss that matters. How does this help shape us moving forward, can we learn from it? Does it reset the passion, motivation and urgency to go down now what will be a little more difficult path with seeding for the RMAC Tournament," Frykholm said. "We'll learn from this as we go forward."
