DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Basketball team earned a 58-53 win over NAIA Northern New Mexico College on Friday night. The Rangers improve to 2-3, while the Eagles fall to 2-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chase Mayo Harmon's steal led to his three pointer, assisted by Aaron Ofstun, for the first basket of the game for Regis. Mayo Harmon then threw down a dunk assisted by Kobe Sanders to go up 7-6 as the teams traded early leads. Jalen Page converted a layup, then swatted an Eagle jumper, and found Trey Bryant on the fast break to tie the match at 15-15. Chi Achara scored five straight for the Rangers, including converting an and-one, but Northern New Mexico went on a run to take the 33-25 lead into the half.
Regis chipped away at the lead, starting the second half with layups from Bryant and Jalen Brown. Brown added two free throws and another layup to bring the game within one. Despite a Ty Cox layup, then a Page layup assisted by Cox, the Eagles still held onto a slight lead. With three and a half minutes left in the game, Eddy Egun hit a triple that gave Regis their first lead of the half, 51-50. Mayo Harmon hit two from the charity stripe, and hit a three of his own to give RU a three-point advantage late. Bryant blocked NNMC's attempt to tie the match, and Page blocked the put-back attempt, and the Rangers held on for the win, 58-53, following a Bryant and-one.
"Our team had a really tough shooting night. I thought we showed grit defensively despite the hard times offensively," said Head Coach Brady Bergeson.
