AUSTIN, Texas – The Regis University Women's Basketball team lost to St. Mary's University by one point on Saturday afternoon, 69-68, in their second game of the South Central Regional Crossover. The Rangers fall to 0-2, while the Rattlers improve to 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Taylin Serlen started the scoring for the game, a layup assisted by Addison Branscum. SMU responded with seven unanswered points before Athena Saragoza's free throw and Serleen's layup ended the run. Erin Fry hit a triple to give RU the 10-9 lead. A fastbreak layup put SMU ahead 20-15, but Serlen hit a single free throw to bring the score to 20-16 after one.
Serlen started the seond with a pair from the charity stripe as well, and a pair of three from Alexa Dominguez and Mary Crossland helped Regis tie the game at 24-24. After a nearly three minute scoring drought from both teams, Fry beat the halftime buzzer with a three to take the 27-26 lead.
St. Mary's scored the first 10 points of the second half before Serlen's layup got the Rangers back on the board. Fry followed that with a three-pointer, and after Dominguez found Saragoza for three, Fry hit all three from the free throw line to bring the score to 39-40. Saragoza ended the quarter with a fastbreak layup and three assisted by Fry to bring RU within one point, 46-47, going into the final period.
Regis took the lead to start the fourth quarter on a Serlen layup, but SMU answered with a 7-0 run. Saragoza and Branscum's layups helped chip away at the Rattler lead, and after Rachel George stole the ball from St. Mary's, she found Saragoza for a layup to tie the game at 56-56. The teams traded basket's, including two jumpers by Serlen and a Saragoza three, but the Rattlers were able to hold o to a slight lead. Ahead by two wit less than 10 seconds left, SMU hit a jumper to go up 4, and Fry's final three to cut the score to 68-69 came too late.
GAME NOTES
· Regis was led by three scorers in double digits, including Fry with 19, and Saragoza and Sereln with 18 apiece.
· Sereln led the Rangers with seven rebounds, while Jessica Bollwahn and Dominguez each had six
· SMU outshot RU from the floor, 47.3% - 34.3%, and from three, 36% - 29%, but struggled from the free throw line, 50% - 76.5%
· Fry was named to the South Central Regional Crossover All-Tournament Team
