DURANGO, Colo- The Regis University Men's Basketball team surpasses Fort Lewis College 96-85 in a Conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Rangers improve to 4-4 (2-0 RMAC) while the Skyhawks fall to 5-5 (0-2 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Skyhawks would score the first seven points of the game before
Trey Bryant's tip-in got the Rangers on the board.
Chase Mayo Harmon would hit a three, but Fort Lewis added to their lead, 6-9. After an offensive rebound from
Eddy Egun,
Jalen Brown would tie up the game with a layup, 13-13. Both teams would go into a scoring drought for the next three minutes until Bryant would hit a jumper. Skyhawks answered with a three. Rangers would close out the half going on an eleven-point run, 40-33.
Sanders and Mayo Harmon started the second half with two triples, and free throws from Bryant helped Regis hold on to a strong lead. Brown would finish an and-one, and Bryant would hit a jumper, increasing the lead to 56-41. Skyhawks finally ended RU's 18-point run with a layup with just 12 minutes left in the game. With free throws from the Skyhawks, they closed the lead to just seven. Bryan would hit one from downtown, ending RU's scoring drought. The Skyhawks capitalized on steals and free throws, cutting the deficit to just three points. Regis and Fort Lewis would trade baskets going into the final 30 seconds. Bryant would hit a free throw, going up 75-72 with 19 seconds to play. Skyhawks answered with an and-one, sending the game into overtime.
Sanders started the scoring for overtime with a layup, assisted by Mayo Harmon. Ty Coz delivered back-to-back layups, complemented by a three-pointer from Mayo Harmon. Skyhawks would respond with a three, closing the gap, RU up 84-82. With eleven seconds to go, Fort Lewis would nail three free throws to take the lead, 89-88. With RU trailing, Mayo Harmon would grab an offensive board and tip in to win the game 90-89.
"We had control of the game most of the way despite our poor ball security. Midway through the second half, we got sped up. Timely turnovers and too many fouls allowed them to get back in the game," said Head Coach
Brady Bergeson.
"But our guys competed hard through all the adversity and found a way in the end. I'm very proud of our resiliency on the road."
GAME NOTES
Brown led RU with 25 points, and Harmon Chase followed with 23.
Bryant totaled a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Mayo Harmon dished six assists, and Bryant five.
Cox grabbed eight boards and handed out three assists.
RU would outshoot Skyhawks 50.8% to 43.8% and 40.9% to 27.8% from three.
