Box Score CHICO, Calif. — The Regis University Women's Soccer team kicked off their 2024 campaign at Chico State University (Calif.) on Thursday night, falling to the Wildcats, 2-1.
The Rangers fall to 0-1-0 to start the season, while CSU improves to 1-0-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chico State would bring the pressure early, with a shot just :38 seconds into the match, and the first shot on goal at 2:20, which was saved by RU freshman goalkeeper Maggie Payne. Senior forward Stella Straubing recorded the first shot for the Rangers seven minutes in, and the first shot on goal at 22:20. After another Payne save, Chico State got on the board on a Natalie Mendoza assisted goal from Kylie Rolling at 29:48.
The Wildcats would keep up the momentum in the second half, with another shot on a goal, and their second score of the game at 49:30, on an Avery Pieri goal assisted by Hannah Pieri. Payne recorded another save before Fernanda Rodriguez recorded a shot on goal at 59:45. After a Natalie Bunch shot, the Wildcats would score an own goal, putting RU on the board at 63:17. Regis would outshoot CSU 4-1 to finish the half, but were unable to score again, falling 1-2.
GAME NOTES
- Rodriguez led the Rangers with three shots, including two of RU's three shots on target.
- Payne totaled six saves in her collegiate debut.
- Regis took nine total shots to 13 from Chico.
- Each team earned four corner kick opportunities.
