DENVER, Colo – The Regis University Men's Basketball team opened RMAC play on Thursday night with a matchup against New Mexico Highlands University, but fell at home, 72-57. The Rangers fall to 1-5 (0-1 RMAC) on the year, while the Cowboys improve to 1-7 (1-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers would open the game with threes from Logan Flores-Peoples and Matt Yost, while Gunner Walters provided an early layup. Walters found Cooper Frith for another triple, and a jumper off an offensive board for Myles Shield gave Regis the 13-12 lead. The Cowboys continued to rebound well, and took the lead on a layup. Shields dunk and Frith's and-one up RU back ahead as the teams traded small leads, and Shields three-pointer gave Regis a five-point advantage. Dylan Forbord swatted an NMHU layup, but the Cowboys went on a run, giving them a 32-26 lead. Frith hit from deep late in the half, but Highlands responded with just three second left, taking a 39-32 lead into the break.
Yost would start the second half strong, with a rebound, three, and steal, and Walters found Frith for a three that cut the Cowboy lead to 44-40. However, another big run by NMHU extended their advantage back to 55-43. Flores-Peoples ended the run with a three, and nailed another a few possessions later. He added a third, followed immediately by one from Yost, but the hot shooting came a little too late for Regis. Forbord scored twice in the paint to close out the game, but the Rangers lost, 72-57.
