DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Soccer Team bounced back with a 4-0 home win over Friends University (Kan.) on Tuesday night. The Rangers improve to 2-1, while the Falcons drop to 2-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Natalie Bunch would put the pressure on the Falcons early, landing two shots on goal. Friends goalkeeper Morgan Wilkinson saved one, while her teammate was able to get a foot on the second for a team save. Not long later, Elsa Nolen started a give-and-go with Paige Davis that would lead to a goal, putting Regis on the board. Following another shot by Bunch being saved, Malia Salema fired a shot off of a Falcon deflection, sneaking the ball under the keeper's hand in the bottom left corner.
Regis would start making big substitutions, including Maggie Payne entering the box, and quickly making an impact with two saves in quick succession. Avery Van Natter took two shots, with one on target, and Payne finished the half with one more save.
11 minutes into the second half, Bunch would get the keeper on the ground and beat another defender for the goal, pushing the Regis lead to 3-0. Following a span where both teams committed fouls, and found themselves offsides, Fernanda Rodriguez took the ball up the left sideline, centering it over two defenders to Elsie Miller, who tapped it to Nolen for her second goal of the day. The Rangers did not let up the pressure late, as Van Natter, Rodriguez, and Davis all had late shots on goal.
"It was nice getting a quick turnaround after a tough matchup over the weekend at #7 Dallas Baptist," said Head Coach Jeff Frykholm. "We learned a lot from that game, and were able to use it tonight."
"Tonight was a very different matchup," he continued, "I try to schedule different types of teams before our conference matches, and Friends played strong woman-to-woman full-field defense that took us a bit to figure out."
"We had some uncharacteristically bad decision-making in the first, but I was really happy with how we improved our tempo and mentality in the second."
