Don Fortney, Men’s Basketball (1965-69)
Fortney was an immediate impact at Regis as he averaged 12.6 points per game, fourth best on the team. Fortney’s sophomore year he led the team in scoring at 22.8 points per contest, while hitting 195 free throws and grabbing 6.9 rebounds per game, second on the team. The record books were re-written during his junior year when he averaged a school record 25.6 points per game en route to 640 points, also a school record. Fortney was rewarded for his efforts on the court earning First-Team All-District in the College Division. He splashed home a school record 268 free throws during the 1967-68 season, which was also first in the nation that season. During his career, Fortney scored 20 or more points 42 times, including games of 30 or more, 15 times and 40 or more, two times. His 1,756 career points ranks him second all-time trailing only Dennis Boone’s 1,901. His 20.4 points per game average for his career ranks him first all-time in the illustrious Regis career books.
Tatum Mahoney Ritchie, Women’s Soccer (1992-96)
Tatum Mahoney was truly one of the great goal scorers in the storied history of Regis soccer. She helped lead the women’s soccer team to the NCAA Division II National Championship game in 1994 and a 14-8 overall record. During the 1994 season, Mahoney scored 12 goals and was selected Second-Team All-West Region. Mahoney set a then school record by scoring 18 goals during the 1996 season. Her exceptional play on the field earned her the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year. However, she would leave her best honor for last as she earned First-Team All-American accolades. She also was a participant in the Umbro All-Star Classic following her senior year.
Norb & Judy Roughton, Contributor (1972-present)
Norb and Judy Roughton (Rou-ton) have dutifully been attending Ranger basketball and volleyball games for the past 36 years. They have seen many of the greatest players that Regis has ever produced along with some legendary coaches. Norb and Judy say, “We have a respect for all the coaches and players over the 36 years we have been attending games. We have gotten to know a lot of different people and would like to congratulate former basketball coaches Lonnie Porter and Linda Raunig, as well as current volleyball coach Frank Lavrisha on their continued success.”. Norb and Judy have six grown children, three sons and three daughters. “Our family has enjoyed the ride and we expect to continue our support of Regis athletics for as long as possible” says the couple. “We see how passionate all the coaches and administration are for Regis, Regis athletics and for the student-athletes.”
Rebekah Tippets, Softball (1999-02)
Rebekah Tippets came to Regis in the fall of 1999 from Anaheim, California and left four years later as one of the greatest hitters in Regis softball history. Remarkably Rebekah was named First-Team All-RMAC all four years as centerfielder for the Rangers. She currently holds Regis career records in hits with 244, doubles, 49, triples, 24, and RBI, 170. She is also third overall in hitting percentage at .397 for her career. She helped guide the Rangers to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament in 2002. During that magical season the Rangers finished 37-21, with Rebekah hitting .402 while starting all 58 games. During the postseason of the 2002 season, Tippets earned spots on the all-tournament teams for both the RMAC Tournament and the Division II South Regional Tournament. Rebekah’s outstanding season did not go unnoticed as she was selected Co-Player of the Year in the Rocky Mountain Conference.
1991 Baseball Team
The 1991 baseball team had high expectations going into the season. The team started the season ranked 29th in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Division II preseason poll. The future looked bright when in the previous year the team amassed 23 wins, at the time the school record. The Rangers played 22 Division I opponents in 1991 and recorded an 11-11 record. The Rangers first took on Central Missouri State at the NCAA Division II Central Regional held in Joplin, Mo. They defeated the Mules 15-11. Scott Landgraf and Phil Zimmerman were both selected Preseason All-American and didn’t disappoint as they hit .368 and .328 respectively on the season. Jeff Piburn (Py-burn) led the team with 65 hits and eight home runs. Pitcher Jim Cleppe (Cle-pee) led the team in wins with nine against no losses. His 2.63 ERA is fourth best in program history. Zimmerman led the team with 50 RBI, 17 doubles and five triples.
