Dan McDermott

The 2013 baseball season will be Head Coach Dan McDermott's 13thseason at the helm of the Regis University baseball team. McDermottassumed head coaching duties in May of 2000 after spending1998-2000 as the Rangers' pitching coach and top assistant. McDermott heads into the 2013 season as the all-timewinningest coach at Regis and second at Briar Cliff University inSioux City, Iowa.

The 2012 squad saw one of the finest seasons in program history. For just the second time in school history the Rangersqualified for the NCAA Tournament.  The Rangers used alate-season run highlighted by their pitching staff to win theirfirst ever RMAC Tournament Championship.  Regis notched 33wins, the second most in school history, including winning 13 oftheir last 16 contests.

Regis defeated CSU-Pueblo in the RMAC Championship game inPueblo and then headed to Mankato, Minn. to play in the NCAACentral Region Tournament.  The Rangers played host MinnesotaState-Mankato in the opening round and fell 1-0 in a pitcher'sdual.  Senior Charlie Henderson went the distance, 9 2/3innings, for the bad luck loss in which he gave up just six hits inthe 10-inning affair.

The Rangers came back and in 11 innings defeated Winona State4-2 to advance.  St. Cloud State ended the Ranger season witha 4-2 victory.

In 12 years as the skipper of the Rangers, McDermott's teamshave gone 305-310 (.496 winning percentage).  The Rangers haveposted a 150-139 (.519) home record over that same time, including17 wins in 2009, the most by any Regis team since McDermott tookover.

At the conclusion of the 2003 season, McDermott was named theRMAC Coach of the Year after leading Regis to a 28-26 overallrecord and a berth in the RMAC Tournament. In 2004, Regis posted a32-18 overall record and advanced into the RMAC Tournament, aswell.

McDermott's coaching resume includes nine seasons (1989-97) asthe head coach at Briar Cliff College (NAIA) in Sioux City, Iowa.During his time at Briar Cliff, McDermott compiled a 345-180-3overall record (.656) while leading his teams to four DistrictChampionships (1990, 1995-97) and six consecutive seasons in theNAIA Top-20 (1992-97). Furthermore, McDermott, who served on anumber of NAIA baseball committees during his time at Briar Cliff,earned District Coach of the Year honors five times and was athree-time Regional Coach of the Year selection.

All told, McDermott has compiled a career record (21 years) of650-490-3 (.570 winning percentage).  Heading into the 2013season, McDermott stands 22nd amongst active NCAA Division II headcoaches with his 650 victories.

Prior to his stint at Briar Cliff, McDermott served as anassistant baseball coach, as well as the recruiting and compliancecoordinator, at Saint Mary's College (NCAA I; Moraga, Calif.) from1985 to 1988. During the summers of 1985 and 1986, McDermott wasthe head coach of the Contra Costa Giants semipro club, leading theteam to a 59-18 record an a pair of East Bay regional titles.

From 1994-97, McDermott spent his off-seasons as the pitchingcoach for the Sioux City Explorers, an independent professionalteam competing at the Double A level. A member of the AmericanBaseball Coaches Association (ABCA), McDermott has also served asan associate scout for the Atlanta Braves.

McDermott began his collegiate coaching career at Metro State in1982, serving as hitting instructor and assistant coach. In 1983,he was named head coach at Wheat Ridge High School. During his twoseasons with the Farmers, McDermott coached the Farmers to a 38-14record and won a pair of league championships (1983-84). He wasnamed league Coach of the Year both seasons. Additionally,McDermott spent the summers of 1981-84 as the head coach of theWheat Ridge American Legion "A" team, compiling a 141-67 record andthree league titles.

After beginning his collegiate baseball career at Western ArizonaJ.C., McDermott transferred to play his final two years at SaintMary's.

McDermott holds a B.A. in History / Physical Education and an M.A.in Physical Education / Athletic Administration from SaintMary's.

McDermott's wife, Joan, is the Director of Athletics atMetropolitan State College of Denver. The couple resides in WheatRidge and has six children, Katie, Scott, John, Tim, Claire, andJackson.
