Box Score Denver, Colo. (By Cassidee Young)
The Regis Ranger crowd has become known for being energetic, spunky, supportive, and very entertaining. Tonight was no different as the Rangers fed off of the energy of their crowd and came out strong to defeat the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands in straight sets.
After a series of kills from all parts of the offense, the Rangers (16-5, 8-3 RMAC) were able to pull away with an early 13-7 lead in set one. With the score at 20-14, the Cowgirls began to close the gap in the first set to 21-20. However, the Rangers resisted their push and a kill by freshman, Gina Morgan closed out the first set 25-22.
The second set of the match remained tight as the Rangers made a series of mistakes. With the score at 15-11, senior Cassidee Young helped Regis pull ahead after back-to-back service aces. With the Cowgirls unable to respond to the Rangers' diverse offense, the second game was closed out by Regis with a score of 25-20.
In the third set of the match, the Cowgirls made sure the Rangers were still on their toes. Both teams traded side outs and this third match would eventually have a total of nine ties. Regis went on to win 25-18 to close out New Mexico Highlands (8-12, 3-8 RMAC).
Lyz Kann, a senior middle hitter for the Rangers, was a very effective threat as she tallied in eight kills with a .235 hitting percentage.
